First, I am currently on rock hard mud tires that are at their end of their service life. They have been awesome in very harsh and abusive conditions off-road. I really need to replace them in the next 3 weeks before my next trip. I want a tire that is more compliant on the highway with better snow and winter characteristics to accommodate the changes in where I go and how I drive now. This is causing me to look at the newer HYBRID all terrain/mud grip tire options.
My Tacoma is a V-6 Automatic with 4.88 gears currently locked front and rear. I am thinking 37's will give me a bigger footprint for soft sand, negating the need to use traction boards as much, and my winch 'never'. My 35's roll over trail obstacles fairly easily, however, sand performance is not what I would like. Snow and Ice performance is not good. Hydroplaning has also been an issue. I do not need a tire to take this pickup all over MOAB.
My main thought with 37's is that in soft sand, soil, or snow, when I air down, the 'footprint' would be a lot better. This may be a distorted view due to my current tires being so damn stiff that low air pressure did not really flatten the tire out much.
Would 37's improve my traction on soft surfaces, and be worth the additional costs and hassles over my current 35's in a better tire format?
I am thinking Toyo Open Country RT Trail tires right now, but I am also receptive to considering other tire options.
What is the wisdom of forum members who have been down this "road" before me? What did you do? How did it work out for you? What is your application for your Tacoma today?
Best Regards,
Sid
