Mounting items on the hood of the FJ40

In an old 4x4 magazine I saw a FJ40 with a D-handle shovel mounted on the windscreen hold down clamps. There isn't much reinforcement under the hood. cheers:beer:

Before you mount too many things on the hood, open the hood all the way open and lean it on the windshield frame/hardtop lip. See how much room you have.

Not that you would ever accidentally leave the hood unlatched while driving but if you did, what ever you attach to the hood just took out your windshield.

Good advice!

BTW: Thanks for putting Cruiser Dans Phone # in your sig, I need to get ahold of him!

Never seen things mounted on the hood, but another option is the flat top of the front fenders.

My brother used to have a shovel and axe holder form Conferr mounted on his fender.

Seen something like this on a jeep. bracket mounts on your hinnge bolts.

Try opening the hood with something like a spare tire mounted on it. Or spending days on rough roads. or the impact to visibility.

Anything small and light enough to be mounted there can easily be stowed/mounted somewhere without the drawbacks inherent in hood mounting.

Might seem to look cool at the mall, but pretty impractical on the road or trail.

There is a JK J*** running around my town with some 33" A/T's and "Jeepers Creepers" written in dayglo green on each side. He is also sporting a hi lift jack on the hood to let everyone how hardcore he is.;)

When I first got my 40 not quite 2 years ago it had had something mounted on the hood from the PO (It was a Georgia State Parks vehicle from 1970 - 2009) and the hood had been beat up pretty good from whatever it was knocking about and dented the hood all up.

The blood of the deer is green! Must be zombie deer! Quick! Shoot'em in the head to be sure!

LOL... My dogs are bigger. ;)

Last year we brought two adult bull moose out from out hunting camp (70 miles in from the trailhead) in the back of one '40. Even gutted and quartered each outweighed those deer by a good bit. NO WAY we could have hauled that load on the hood.

Wiped out a set of rear springs getting them out though :(

Just for grins, here is a pic of my rig when I got home a couple of years ago with a much smaller moose. :)

Oh Look! they are waving hello at us!

Cool picture.

Ok now...lets focus.

I could see times where having certain items on the hood may be useful......That Dumba$$ is me BTW

It does not have to be a heavy item to be useful and with the limited space in the FJ40, I am open to exploring the concept....I just think that so far the applications are poorly executed.

I searched the web and am just throwing these pictures out there for conversation and brain storming.

I find this kind of silly, Esp with the fact that there are much better ways to mount a high lift jack, the lights would probably just light up the hood.

A shovel and an axe mount may be a good idea..

Just thinking out loud here...

For those concerned about structural integrity, the FJ40 has the advantage over the jeep by having 4 potential mounting points on the hood instead of 2

Windshield sprayer would need to be unobstructed to do its job.

Wind buffeting may be an issue.

Hmmm, I could see more value in some sort of tray rather than a mounting bar.....

What do you think? Decent idea or just stupid?

Lights on the hood look really cool.

It really depends on how you use the lights as far as how useful/effective they are. If your rig is clean, you will get a glare from the hood like driving into the sun. They will not point at the ground so you will be able to see where your vehicle is going or make it easier to set you tent up at night, it will not show you where your tires are going to be in the next 5'. It depends on your style of driving.

They will also point into the vehicle in front of you. If you are that driver, that can really piss you getting blinded by your mirrors. Easy fix is to be the trail leader as much as possible.

I would love to have a set of Hi Intensity LEDs.

The old British Land Rover hoods that were factory made to carry a second spare tire had an INSANE level of cool to them, and for long treks into the serious backcountry, it makes a lot of sense.

Probably not very accessible if you're massively lifted and running bigger than 31's though. . .
