The inverter thread got me thinking how nice it would be to have a small generator mounted somewhere under my 80 that taps the fuel tank and starts and stops remotely. Something similar to those found on RVs. This is just another brainstorming session. Do small units eixst that might mount under the hood or possibly under the truck somewhere maybe in the factory location of the spare tire. I would like to possibly power a portable space heater with this as it may be more cost effective than the webasto/espar heaters in my other thread. This is just an idea kicking thread for those expedition oriented cruiserphytes.

i dont know about something that small and permamently mounted, but you have the option of a very small honda (and a few others) that are wisper quiet that you could just pack along for the trips you want it. would be nice for sleeping to have a small ext. cord and the generator off under a tree or something.

The smallest ones I know of (that have sufficient juice to power anything usefull) are the Honda. I have the 2000W version and they are indeed nice and quiet--you can actually talk in a normal volume when right next to it and it's running.

But they are not small enough to sit under the truck--they have to be sitting in the vertical position which is over a foot tall. Besides that, it would be exposed to all sorts of grunge that would ruin it pretty quickly I think.

The RV units don't sit exposed to the elements--they are contained in a housing under the RV--at least the ones I've seen.

I agree with RINO that the best option would be to just pack it along. At least that way you can also use it in places your truck won't go if you want to.
