If ya wanna mall cruiser, shove the 35s under it stock and go for it.

If you want to hit the trails.... Well, it depends on just what you do on the trails.

One of my '80s has (sagged) stock suspension and 305s. It tags along on the trails with no rubbing problems at all (loaded with family and gear on moderate trails). Another of my '80s has 6 inch Slee springs in back and I managed to stuff a wheel deep and hard enough to rip the factory flare off last year with 315s. Time to revisit my bumpstop sizing. :(

How you use the rig is the biggest part of the question and the hardest to quantify. If you never lift or hang a tire in the air, then you can run larger tire/less lift than if that is a routine occurrence on your trails. (Or... if you set your bump stops up right. )

A wheel with more offset than OEM or wheel spacers complicate fit too. Especially up front, but even in the rear it adds to fender flare or bumper clearance concerns.
