Made some progress on my Headgasket today. The internals look rather sludged up. I discovered a reddish greenish coolant upon draining so Im suspecting maybe someone blended flavors with some water. Ill probably end up using Prestone as it is readily available. Im gonna see what is the best option to tackle this rust. Any opinions?
My parts should be in any day now, at least the wait should give me some time to clean things up.

I would start with the cheap easy way first. Just start flushing that block with a lot of water. Keep water flowing through until it becomes cleaner. You can try the Prestone coolant flush products to see if they help.

I do plan on using a flush. I’m thinking Preston’s has a good product but I’ll probably use thermocure. I’ll also soak the head in this rust remover. I was considering doing electrolytic magic but I don’t want to chance damaging the head.

Send the head to a machine shop and have this done professionally.

You were going to send it to a machine shop, right?

Also, do not reuse your head bolts. Replace all of them.

Are you just replacing the bolts because they are cheap insurance? I didn't think the head bolts were TTY?

Yup got all 18 bolts along with valve stems seals. I’m also replacing intake and exhaust bolts. I am on the fence about sending it to a machine shop. I’m gonna see how level/straight it is and go from there.

I'm not replacing anything. If I was doing this job and the hassle that it is, I sure as s*** would not re-use 30 year old bolts in a critical application like mating a cast iron head to a cast iron block. :meh:

I agree 100% on that. Next week sometime I'll drop my head off at a machine shop and see what they recommend. Im suspecting the head to be fine as it is cast iron and not aluminum which warpage is more common. Either way, I will take your advice and take it to a machine shop; then go off of their recommendation.

Edit: @beno thank you for having me look into it. It’s not going to be as expensive as I first thought and is totally doable with my budget.

Send it to the machine shop. Do this correctly and don't half ass it.

Hello,

x2.

Do it right the first time and you will not need to return to it.

Good machinists know a thing or two we mere mortals do not.

A proper repair will last you another 20 years.

Those came out very nice! I sanded and polished my valve cover it came out pretty good, didn't even think of painting it.

Sanded down some of the surface rust on the front and behind the grill then tried plasti-dip for the first time. Not too bad and I can always remove it if I don't like it seems.
Also my no shut-off problem seems to have fixed itself I've driven it for the last two days and the clutch pedal has felt good and it shuts off every time. I still will investigate though. Im currently waiting on the parts to come in, so until then the Goat will remain in the driveway.
