In the next 3 weeks or so I will be cutting the current sliders off and re-surfacing them if anyone is interested in them. The proceeds will go to funding an Amazon welder!
I really don't know what an Amazon welder means, but friends don't let friends buy crappy welders.
I have been fabricating for 2 decades and own 2 really nice welders (MIG and TIG/Stick). I also own all the other trappings like a bender, notcher, plasma cutter.
That being said, I am also in grad school and have just started a project. I decided to save my very precious time and just bought sliders. I can get them for almost the price of materials. I still have to fit and weld them on. Instead of buying a beginner welder, you should join a club. It is cheaper and plenty of members will let you use their shops and equipment to do work. When you are ready to buy a welder, you should buy a good one that will last and lay down great beads. The cheapest welder you should even consider is over $700 (assuming you are looking at wire feed welders). If you have your eye on anything cheaper than that or anything that is 115 volt I would kindly suggest you look at something better or simply hold off. My first welder was a 115 flux core Craftsman that I bought to build sliders with and it was terrible, so I am speaking from experience.
