Motor Trend covers the 2014 Series 70 in Tokyo

Lots of people are passing these up for late model 70's because of the no diesel thing. A club member just bought a '98 HZJ78 with 150k kms for about the same price ($32k) of a new 70 Series wagon. Crazy eh!! People just prefer the 1HZ and feel Toyota wasn't "really" thinking about what the Japanese LandCruiser crowd wants. Some are just saying F'it and getting a Jeep.

The diesel that Toyota sells in the 70 in Australia, the Middle East, S. Africa, etc. just would not pass Japanese emissions. So they did what they could and put in the petrol V6 that would pass emissions. It's been a big hit so who know- Toyota may decide to re-release it sometime in the future.

The key reason that this vehicle is a limited edition is because that Japan is mandating VSC on all new vehicles starting June 2015, and this truck doesn't have VSC (and would have to be significantly changed to accommodate it.)

I didn't know about the VSC mandate. I thought most new cars had it anyway. We just had a year end party for our 4wd group and were discussing all the new clean diesel vehicles coming onto the market yet Toyota just goes through the motions by slapping in the gasser. That seemed to be the sentiment anyway. Many have given up completely on Toyota and moved on to the smaller Jimny for wheeling.

At least in the case of the Jimny, YES! Pretty much in-destructible.

I imagine the target market in Japan for this nostalgic LC is somebody who's owned them in the past.... maybe 45-50 years old. They don't want diesels because of their bad stigma as being dirty and noisy... since the days they were restricted from driving diesels in Tokyo and other major metropolitan cities in early 2000. Their friends and neighbors will shun them. lol. :ban:

The newer economy diesels cars (i.e. Jimny) are targeted to the younger generation. :meh:

I'm sort of surprised they didn't use the 1VD-FTV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_VD_Engine). I would have thought they could easily make such a hi-tech engine meet the emissions requirements of Japan.

That motor is over-kill for the Japanese domestic market. The 4.0 V6 has more than enough grunt for as hard as those vehicles are going to be worked. I do love that motor however.

No Jimny diesel that I know of.
You still can't drive diesels in Tokyo and you can't register them in Tokyo and Kanagawa prefecture. There are ways around it but it's a PITA. Everyone does drive them in the city though. The country would grind to a halt if they did enforce it. Shunning...? No one gives a $hit about that anymore. ;)
