A buddy and I are researching which model year 60 series are the best for long term durability and also, which are best for diesel conversion? Thanks. All your input is appreciated.

Its not really like the 80 series....There is no big debate or fights on which 60series is better. Just find the best kept and rust free one you can (any year).

Agreed with one caveat: the super early 60s had some oddball parts that are hard to find. We're talking 81-ish.

You converting to a non toyota diesel? Then does not make any difference which years you look for since you will be doing a lot of modifiying already.

I agree with lowtideride just get the cleanest body one you can find. Maybe look for one with a blown engine or major problem but has a nice interior, straight body, and rust free.

x 4 on the clean body and frame , not sure about fj's since all hj and bj's up here are diesel :D , but pre 85 have a manual high range 4wd selector ( less problems ) imo , how ever i like the interior in my 85 way more than my 84's ive had . i looked at a dozen cruisers to replace my 84 and finaly bought one that was a comprimise , the p.o. had spent about $7000 over the last few years $3000 this year alone on repairs and mainenance , i got it for $3750 they were asking $5600 the frame is very very solid , one of the most import considerations for me . body wise its strting to deteriate ( rust ) in the usual places , nothing a little money won cure :frown: .

i have just ordered a full ome dakar 2.5 " and a set of 33 x 9.5 15 BFG AT KO's . :grinpimp:

Thanks Y'all...

Straight, clean and tight. That's cool; any year would really fit the bill.

We aren't sure what type of diesel conversion we are talking about yet, but we are all ears.

By the way the truck is being shopped for out of Durango; if anyone happens to know of anything that might be available...

:D :D :D

The FJ60s are all so similar, there is no real reason to pic one year over another. In a perfect world, I would take a clean late 86 or 87 and do an immediate H55f tranny conversion. Since everything but the axles will end up in a different place anyway in a diesel conversion, I agree with everyone else-clean and as rust free as possible.

Durability wise-no difference in model years.

Um, since you're an 80 guy, are you asking specifically about 60s or about 60s & 62s?

I have a Nov 81...What parts are you talking about?

Some of the interior trim is very hard to replace and there are a random collection oddball drivetrain items like internal xfer case parts and such that were only used in the very early 60s.

I live in the land of rust-free cruisers so those details would be more important to me since I'd have a bigger selection of solid body/frame examples to choose from if I was looking.

call jeremiah at proffittscruisers.com up near DElta, he always seems to have leads on good cheap pretty rust free 60s. Hope it helps..
