i tried to do it while running, but i could not put the screw driver on it, dam* near rattled my hand loose.

I can't imagine adjusting the valves with the engine running.
That was the "only" way to do it on the original SBCs, so that's where I learned, with hot oil squirting all over. Do it once: you'll never complain about the other annoying 2F jobs.
Oh please, There is no oil shooting anywhere on a inline 6 and yes you do it running just did mine a week ago. As far as rattling your hand off you just have to put a little pressure on the screw driver when adjusting the valves. 2 people make it alot easier 1 to check the other to adjust.
