More power steering woes

I've been battling power steering problems for about 1-1/2 months
now on my '86 FJ60 (had about 4 months now). My original pump
failed rather catastophically... I first made the mistake of
replacing it with an aftermarket pump which was a POS...sprayed
fluid all over the place. Now I've got an OEM re-build that I
bought from JT Outfitters.

My problem now is that it looks like the shaft seal is leaking, pretty
badly. Is my luck really so bad that I've gone through 3 pumps in
as many months? Has anyone else seen bad rebuilds?

Is it possible that over-tensioning the belt would cause the seal to
fail? (I don't think I've done this, but I'm so frustrated that I'm
grasping for straws...)

I've pretty much resigned myself to replacing the smog pump too,
since it's been soaked with better than a gallon of transmission
fluid. And my wife is just delighted with the new pink colored driveway.

belt tension, maybe....I fried a 2 year old OEM water pump that way. Now religiously use a belt tension gauge when tightening the belts. Napa stocks a decent, inexpensive one called the Kriket. For the $10 or so bucks for the tool, it's cheap install insurance.

best bet would be to replace the remanufactured pump with a new OEM part. spendy = yes. pita to replace again = yes. piece of mind knowing it will probably last 20 yrs. like the original = yes again.... ;)

I had my PS pump rebuilt by an outfit in Florida. (Easy to find on google.) Approx $150. About one month after the warrenty ran out it began to leak. After it killed my air pump, I ordered an OEM PS pump from CDan. Works great. Shoulda done that instead of rebuilding mine. Lesson learned is that somethings don't rebuild well. From what I can tell brake calipers do, PS pumps dont. This subject might be an interesting FAQ???
