I took my 97 where I could get on grass and the center lock came on when I put it in 4 low and the front and rear came on and flashed till I moved a little. Then I turned them off and turned around a turned them back on and the rear keep flashing and would not quit flashing. What would cause this.also I need to grease my Birfields is Mobil 1 ok for them.

Cruiser Larry,

There are several posts on "testing lockers" and this will give you a good explanation. The key thing to remember is that the dog clutch in the rear is large and this requires a good bit of travel difference between the left and right rear wheels before the lock will re-engage.

Use moly grease in the birfields. Some prefer the Amsoil "purple". M1 will be OK *if* it is a moly grease. Use non-moly in the wheel bearings.

Had you moved around a little more from side to side, the red ones (front and rear) should lock up again if they did the first time. They don't always engage immediately until you start slipping or turning.

There's more to birfield maintenance than adding grease. You need a service manual or do some deep searching here about steering knuckles and birfields. Maybe you could elaborate further about your history with the truck and what's been done to it so we can offer advice on what you might do in the way of preventative maintenance. If you want advice. :D

i JUST GOT IT LAST NOV.AND CHANGED THE ENGINE OVER TO MOBIL 1 SYNTHETIC AND GREASED WHERE I COULD.STILL TRYING TO LEARN WHAT i NEED TO DO.

Don't konw if you mean to to be yelling in all caps, but that's ok. Anway, about the birf's, it's been recommended that you not add grease. It is better to break it down and do a repack if the mileage warrents it. Adding grease at the plug will only fill outside the joint and not really add any, where you really want to. Plus some will argue about mixing grease, and I think grease is grease till it comes to the birfs. I'd keep it one type in there.

Yep mobil 1 is a good call. I use it too in everything but the axles, I just use cheaper durablend.

Mobil 1 grease is not a moly and not recommended for the birfields.
