Moon roof leak

Earlier this year my moon roof stopped working so I was fine letting it be. I’ve noticed several time where water started to weep around the headliner in the pass side corners but it was minor. Now after the rains we’ve had on the east coast I have had puddles in the pass floor board. I even had an issue where my rpm gauge went out for a bit and my immobilizer light stayed on solid. Both went away but I attributed it to the leak. I put down some clear rtv and even some spray seal stuff but still leaks. I pulled the a pillar down and I’ve got a steady drip off the headliner. Is it possible the leak could be from something else up there and not the moon roof?

Yeah I can’t because the roof doesn’t work anymore. That’s why I went ahead and put sealant around the outside. Also a year ago I got them cleaned out and they were flowing pretty good at all four corners.

Drop the headliner, pull the sunroof assembly out of the ceiling and lubricate the cables. It'll take all of two hours.

Unfortunately, this is the only solution. It takes more than 2 hours, but the sunroof mechanism isn't too complicated once you get it out. you have to work carefully and methodically , but i can be done. here is my sunroof mechanism during the rebuild. It took me probably 8 total hours to drop the headliner, pull apart and fully clean and get the sunroof working again, and re-install.

Yes to all of the above, that's what I did and I enjoy my roof working again. Just know there is another option if time or money are a concern - the glass can be easily removed even if the drive mechanism is jammed. Remove the black plastic trim pieces on the inside of the glass, and then the 4 cadmium plated nuts that hold the glass to the cable mechanism. The entire glass then lifts straight up and out of the truck so you can snake the drains.

Another common source of leaks is the harder rubber trim that's bonded to the glass. It's two pieces and can begin to separate at the joints, sealant can be helpful there.

Don't delay this, get the glass out and snake your drains ASAP regardless of what you decide to do with the drive mechanism before your electrical gremlins get worse.

I've got a thread on sunroof repair that shows glass removal, and a post somewhere on sealing the hard rubber seal leak.

Are you sure it is your sunroof leaking? How is your windshield? I just removed my windshield and the top huge bead of urethane came completely off with the windshield. Was not even bonded to the steel! I am currently mitigating rust for a windshield replacement next week. Might be worth testing by pouring water in the top channel of the windshield.

You can access the drain holes by simple popping out the black trim and removing the 4 gold bolts from underneath. The glass will lift right out

All good tips here. I will echo the windshield trim check on the A-Pillars, too. Most of these trucks have had windshields replaced and probably 90% of them had botched windshield trim installs (screws instead of rivets, no rivets, etc).

While it does sound like you are having a drain issue with the moon roof, there could also be more than meets the eye with the windshield.

Allow yourself some time if you plan on taking the sunroof tray all the way out.
