Where are the pictures of the carnage:popcorn::bounce::bounce2:

Carnage? The tire? Will shoot a pic when I have enough energy to get it out of the rig, but most will probably look at and think, which of the hundreds of cuts actually leaked.:hillbilly:

Yep, only hissed when that spot was down, drove for ~1/4 mile on it before it went totally flat.:princess:

here is some un-related carnage

Here is some carnage, for your viewing pleasure.

This weekend was up North giving the 60 tires a little more abuse. Ended up with a puncture. Patched it to limp home. Wasn't really limping, but running 65mph. Made it almost back home to Phoenix, the tire gave out completely on the I-17.

WOW! Glad to hear everyone is ok:cool: How old are the tires?

Thanks Phil, we're all good. I'm not sure on the tire age exactly. I've probably put 3,000 miles on them, maybe half trail, half street over the last year. They were heavily used when I bought the truck from Kavik. I figured i'd run them to death (of the tires that is). Goodyear Wrangler MTR's in 37 inch.

I'm gonna run BMANs old wheels and tires for a bit while I shop. I'm wanting some Mickey Thomspon 35 Baja MTZ's. Gonna watch the boards for deals before I go pay retail.

Check/post the DOT code on the sidewall, near the rim.

I checked it this A.M. in the light. Those Goodyears were made in the second week of 2002. last four digits of DOT code are 0602 for 1 pair and 0202 for the second pair. That means week 6 of 2002 and week 2 of 2002.

Tire manufacturers say once a tire reached 6 years old, it should be replaced. related article > Tire Age and Driving Safety

Ive replaced tires on my vehicle before when they got 6 years old. When Im tooling down the hill from Payson at high speed with the family, gear, and trailer behind me. No amount of money would offset the results of a tire failure.

Some people in the industry say that this may eventually become legislation which would apply to probably to used car sale facilities more than anyone.

I remember several years back at one of the Chevy dealers here in town, some guy traded in his 1978 Corvette which was in nice shape and low miles since it was parked alot. Another customer saw it being traded in and bought it there on the spot. The dealer essentially had him sign paapers and handed him the keys right there. On his way home on the I-17, he accelereated hard on the on ramp to see what the Vette had. Once he got up to speed in the short distance, he had catastrophic tire failure, and totaled the car into the wall.

Fiberglass doesnt do well with concrete barriers.

X2, most tire shops wont warranty tires after 4 years. Tire rubber is a heat cured product, it continues to cure/harden with time, heat cycles. So has the best grip on the first day, as it ages grip is reduced, is more prone to chunking, delamination, etc.

I was lucky twice when i shredded one of my Krawlers. I was dong 75 mph in my Piggy up the Bee Line, fully loaded with camping gear and wife. The tire stayed mounted on the bead, and I really had no control problems getting it off the road. When I went to Discount Tire for a replacement, they covered the warranty, even though it was way over the age limit. It was mostly due to the fact that it had really low miles on it, and I have bought tons of tires there. Oh, I also told them if they covered the bad one, I would buy another one to make it a matched set. I noticed the other day that on my 80, the Wranglers have 2009 molded into the side walls, so I am guessing that is the production year. John

The last four numbers in the DOT code are the month and year produced on most tires.

I.e. a DOT with the last four being 1607 would be tires produced in the 16th week in 2007.

Glad you were safe on your blowout!

I saw a tire let go on the 51 once where the tire on the rear of a Impala blew and the woman did several 360's while going down the busy freeway. Ended up in the same lane she was in, alot of smoke and no one got hit or hurt. I was behind and to her left and it certainly got my attention!

I am definitely not seeking warranty replacement

Don't miss understand. This was old and used rubber. I think the age of the tire was more of a "how long did it last?" sort of question. I bought them used and used them more. I'm happy.

I think you could have gotten another 20 miles from her... :grinpimp: All jokes aside - that must have been a wake up call when it happened...

that and i'm sure it was leaking all the way home, who knows how long it was half flat before letting go.
since i run 37's i'm interest how it felt when it went? never had a blowout with the rim this high off ground.

The truck went from level to nose down in about 5 center line marks on the free way. It's not a big deal, just keep directional control, and decelerate. Slowly get off the road. The truck will steer even if you are driving on the rim. My best advise is, don't panic.

Ya mostly gotta be worried about all the people going 85 by you not noticing you are decelerating.

no kidding, lots of ppl in theyre own little worlds on the road. thats part of the reason i usually cruise around 60-62, that way folks are already planning on passing me, and the tires, and it just seems comfy at that speed in old iron.

thanks for the intel, though i hope i never experience it.

"Carnage" highlighted by the arrow. It had other blemishes, didn't owe me anything and was already pricing it's replacement.

It is at Sears being replaced. They had by far the best deal $$$ I found and have been a pleasure to deal with.
