molding removal on doors, please help

i'm a newbie and this is my first post, so please be gentle...

i want to remove the black & chrome molding strips that are located just above the bottom of the doors and run the length of the vehicle (there are four strips like this on either side of the vehicle.) i tried to peel-back a bit of it and it seems pretty easy to remove (just seems to be held on with glue of some sort) but thought someone might have some helpful advice on how to do this without marring the paint.

any tips greatly appreciated!

OK, I'll bite...pull them off carefully, and the paint should be fine. If there is any adhesive left, you can use something like 3M adhesive remover to clean it. I have a spray can of it on the shelf in my garage...

welcome! which cruiser do you own?

she's an 88 fj62 with just 130k on her; red and in excellent cond!

i did take the after-market black moldings off; they came off easy and left just a little bit of glue residue behind. i think i'll have to take-up lovetoski's offer and try some of his 3m adhesive remover.

Sometimes WD40 will work to remove adhesive residue. Try that first, if you have a can.

Living in So Cal the moulding and consequential rust really isn't a problem for me. I have cut my hand several times though on the chrome piece of the drivers side door just below the window because the black endcap fell off years back. Replacing it requires buying the whole thing. If you are able to keep it intact, maybe we could work something out.

i had a can of wd 40 and tried that on the glue removal - that worked great archie, thank you. next i'm thinking about removing the chrome strips around the wheel wells - there was another thread about chrome strip removal where someone suggested doing that. is that a good idea? seems from all the pics i've seen everyone does that.

if anyone's looking for stock molding, which is what i've been removing (and carefully so it's in perfect shape) let me know and we may be able to strike a deal.
