modify family car or buy a dedicated car for off roading?

it was my first time to anza borrego. i went to the mud caves, diablo drop off, and sand canyon. i was a bit underwelmed. i thought it would be a prettier based on the number of people who were there.

As they say, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder."
My wife and I are beach and high country/forest types. But over the years we've grown to appreciate the unique beauty of the the desert.
Albeit, after a weekend, we're done with it and want our beach again.
For off roading, generally we're in the deserts during the cold months and the high country when the temps start coming up.
