Modifying a broken power antenna to accept a more modern FUBA type roof mount antenna.
This may not be super detailed because im busy moving to NM. I hope this helps someone.
The antenna is less than $20 on Amazon , and the hardware to adapt it was about $1 from the hardware store.
To start remove the threaded chrome threaded bushing/retaining nut, pull the antenna out and snip off the plastic wire that is part of the retracting device. Retract the remaining plastic wire back down with the switch. Push the antenna back through the metal tube with plastic end. You will be using the tube with plastic piece.
Take your M6 X 1.0 X 80 mm machine screw and grind/file/sand the diameter of the head to the same diameter of the metal tube (this was about .390")
Now take 2 each plastic or metal bushings. These were were the right o.d. At 5/16" But needed to be drilled out with 15/64 bit to fit the 6mm screw. Below is a pict of the drill jig I made to hold the bushings while drilling. Insert the screw, with one bushing installed near the head of the screw, into the bottom of the tube, then press the other bushing onto the screw from the other end so only the threads are exposed (this should be about 1/2").
Now place the threaded bushing/ retaining nut over the threads and screw the antenna on to the screw securely. This assembly is now ready to install back into its original position.
