I'm planning to go out there in October when I get back from the Stan.
I've heard that either Spring or Fall is the time to go because it gets so hot in the summer. Should be an excellent time to drive out west
Same boat as Eric...... personally i'd tow to a place that could easily break almost any part on the rig, not if you take it easy ....... but hey it's YOU.
I think Kyle was talking about going out there and towing.... he has a 2 or 3 car trailer so i'd hit him up if I was you.
The key is to bring spares of everything that is most likely to break out on the trail, but what is more important than that is to make sure that EVERYTHING on the truck is up to par for driving across the country. Minimal oil leaks, functioning AC, recently serviced bearings and brakes, good tires and spare, etc.
The list of spares / consumables I plan to bring include, but are not limited to:
2 knuckles - one driver and one passenger, with studs, cone washers and nuts included
3 birfields, two of which are fully assembled with inner axle]
2 spare TREs, one right hand thread, one left hand thread
1 spare front leaf spring ( main and second leaf )
Knuckle rebuild kit w/ bearings ( trunion and wheel )
Two gallons of coolant
Two gallons of gear oil
2 quarts ATF
1 quart brake fluid
5lb bucket of moly grease
Grease gun
1 spare u-joint
Spare driveshaft with new u-joints installed
Spare front hub assembly with rotor, free wheel hub, hub selector and bearings
New tub of RTV
100' of electrical wire
Weatherproof crimp connectors
electrical tape
Spare filters ( oil and fuel )
Collection of spare nuts and bolts
Engine belts
Coolant hoses
Tools, lots of tools, manual, pneumatic and electric
Kyle, are you planning on going out west as well?
