Does anyone know if there is a vendor somewhere who has a 12HT multi layer steel headgasket on the shelf?
I think i just blew mine (again) and it might be worthwhile to invest in a better one.

I haven't pulled the head or even did a compression check, but the symptoms are exactly the same as the last time i blew it.

20 psi might be a bit to much boost afterall. :)

Are you using a stock gasket now? I thought they where MLS??

20psi isn't that much. I am running 17psi in a similar set up as you?

The stock gasket is just a regular headgasket. Nothing special.

A 3B has a MLS headgasket as a stock replacement from the dealer. The 1HZ/HD is also MLS.
But somehow a 2H/12HT MLS gasket is nowhere to be found.

I used to think 20psi wasn't to big of a deal, but i'm not so sure anymore. I will check the compression numbers and hope it not a bigger issue.

maybe if you do it all day everyday .. like when towing ..

Thanks for the info. I just bought a new MLS gasket for my 3B and the dealer told me Toyota had moved that way on all head gaskets. I didn't know getting one for the 12H-T was going to be an issue.

let us know what you find.

Well, the head is off and it was the headgasket as expected. It burned thru between the 4th and 5th cilinder. I'll have the head checked for warpage and skimmed if neccesery. The worst surprise i had is that there is light scorching on two cilinder walls. So i'll probably hone it and get a new set of pistonrings. I'm kinda bummed about that since i only have 50,000 Km on it after a full rebuild.

And i checked the injectors too. Two of them don't really look good. So i'll drop those off at the diesel shop.
It's going to be an expensive week. Sigh...

But to get back to the original question. Is there a vendor out there that stocks a steel headgasket? Pretty please. :)

Sorry for the late reply. Not on mud that often anymore...

I never found an MLS gasket. Instead i used headbolts out of an early (pre '84) 2H. Those don't neck down like the post 84 ones and probably stretch less. Also i torqued the head a bit more than what the FSM says. Never had a headgasket problem after that.

I'll be replacing the 12HT with a 1HDFT sometime this year. So much easier to get MLS gaskets for :grinpimp:

Digging up an old thread...

I do have MLS head gaskets for the 12HT, and they have worked for me in solving issues relating to head gasket failures after the original one went south at around 295,000 Kms due to lack of adequate coolant during its former life in Japan. I posted an advert in JDM classified parts section.

There were a number of issues associated with my head gasket issues and then two repeat failures at low mileage: #2 went some 150 kms later following a head job and resurfacing, then #3 went at about 1250 kms pushing up a steep hill, fully loaded on a hot spring day coming out of Kamloops after I ran it up to full boost... and that was following a full rebuild including decking the block.

I'll add more info later, but this was a very frustrating experience for me having to tear in to my engine three times in a matter of months, and after a full rebuild of the engine.

VRS Valve regrind set. so, if its just a valve job ( or blown gasket0, you use this kit, no other gaskets or seals such as water pump, oilcooler or sump are provided.

I know that the pictures do not always represent the actual product, but this one is more for the 2H as there is no intake manifold gasket for the 12HT . Also it's very expensive for what you see in the photo, by South Africa standards anyway.

Okay thanks! Good to know that is s***. :)
But where can i find mls gasket?

Mick from ADS Injection in Mareeba, Queensland, Australia sells them. ADS Injection
