My '73 FJ40 does not have the Vapor Separator installed. the PO did give it to me, but it has one broken nipple.

The fuel lines are capped, and I get some noticeable pressure on the gas cap when I refuel from time to time.

There also does not appear to be any charcoal canister from what I can tell, the dual battery is where I think the canister would be:

So I am guessing that having extra pressure in the fuel tank is not a good thing, but curious how essential the separator and charcoal canister are. How much work I am looking at to install it? Are there any simpler alternatives?

I obviously do not want to damage my fuel tank, which is my biggest worry.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had 2 of the nipples on my separator broken, causing gas smell. I bought some brass threaded nipples at the hrdwr. store and drilled out the broken nipples then carefully threaded them into the separator. Worked great. I wish I would have taken a pic.

I am not so concerned with the separator itself, as I am with the charcoal canister and all the plumbing between the two. But, I also have not been able to find an alternative solution...
