Cool, I think I can mock up that position, measure the span, and see what's similar off the shelf!
@GeologistFelix the picture OSS posted is of the reverse side. Like with the latch assembly removed. Just wanted to note that. From your picture you wouldn't be able to see the spring at all.

Yup, took me a second to figure that out when I looked at that shiny new latch, but I think I understand what's going on now.
