Well, hope everyone’s Saturday is going better than mine. Was headed out to Texarkana to meet up with a buddy and get his hunting gear before our annual turkey trip to Wyoming only to make it 2/3 of the way and be blessed with limp mode and flashing CEL. Get off the highway ASAP and pull the codes to find P0300, P0302, and P0308. Clear them and let it sit for a few minutes while I Google what they are. Turn it back on and let it idle for a few minutes and it seems to be running fine. Get about 5 minutes down the highway and repeat. Pull off asap and this time it’s P0300, P0306, and P0308.

Multiple misfires, at least on 2, 6, and 8 so same bank which is concerning. 2021 with 75k miles—have no engine mods done so a little perplexed. Really hoping it’s lottery levels of luck and only coils and/or plugs. Guess we will find out soon enough—tried to do some digging while waiting for the flatbed, only found threads in the 100 series section. Anyone dealt with a multiple cylinder misfires before?

How was it idling?

Any engine/powertrain mods?

Was idling fine, sounded pretty normal to my ears though it was a monsoon. Engine temp was holding steady at normal level, no smoke or vapor under hood or from tailpipe. No engine or transmission mods, not even one of those tunes everyone is doing these days. Regular servicing according to the manual that was done by dealership while covered for first two years and then my local Toyota/Land Cruiser specialty shop after

Any chance of water contamination of your fuel?

This thought had crossed my mind; I just gassed up yesterday before I parked it and made it 100-120 miles before it was misfiring. I filled up at my usual 7/11 down the street though

Mine has done the same randomly twice.

best I can figure it’s a cam phaser thing. But I have not went into full diagnostics mode., both times mine did it it had been idling for a few minutes

Well Toyota called and it’s looking like worst case scenario. They went down their list and ended up pulling plugs and scoping the engine and while cylinder 8 looks ok they said there was a lot of scoring on the walls of cylinder 6 along with some coolant. They’re thinking head gasket issue. I’ve never overheated, never had issues with temps. They’re going to start a case with Toyota corporate for me to see if they’re willing to assist in this because while I’m over the mileage for the 5yr/60k I’m under the time as 5yrs of ownership is actually this upcoming Monday. Their initial thought is engine rebuild or engine swap. Will update me again on Monday. Absolutely gut wrenching news

Damn.

Damn bud. I’m sorry. That sucks.

Not another one…. Ugh. Age and mileage are crazy low and not too far off of where mine is. What’s your maintenance like, you doing the recommended 10k mileage on oil or something more reasonable?

This is crazy for a 2021 with 75k miles.
Bigly! I know there was lots of talk about potential manufacturing issues involving all types of products and equipment during the lockdown days, especially after that initial period when things started moving again… this has got to be a fluke and could possibly be attributed to that. Idk, grasping at straws and al but, like you said, very low miles and age.

Perhaps. But the fact it’s a head gasket issue which seems to be a real problem with the older 200 models is a big concern.

It did every 10k when Toyota was keeping it on their schedule for the first two years. Since my independent shop took over it’s been every 5k

I completely agree and hope Toyota sees it that way as well. Compiling all my service records from the independent now so I can have proof of the well maintained service history

Fingers crossed for you dude. They absolutely should take care of you on this. Unacceptable from this platform.

Interesting. I’d like to think that by having them handle it for a while and I’d also imagine your Indy shop is reputable that this may help in what they decide to do in the “help” department.

I wonder how Toyota would look at this situation if you did all your own maintenance? I do all mine so the only actual proof I could supply them would be the Blackstone analysis I get done with each change but that would also show that I switched to 0W30 at 5k miles on the vehicle.

I don’t know how it’d be anything other than reasonable for 0w30 wt to be held in high regard for their viscosity recommendation per the Toyota viscosity and oil change interval chart. I’ve been running 0w30 for a while too and plan on continuing it for winter use while switching from 5w30 for summertime.

Hearing these anecdotes of HG failures on well maintained rigs make me think there’s an endemic issue we are now seeing as 2019+ (lockdown) owners. I am now floating this theory as what’s going on with the HG issues rearing their ugly heads.

@HSTexan again - I’m sorry you’re dealing with this issue. Please keep the thread up to date. I am rooting for a good outcome for you.

Sorry to hear, hopefully Toyota will be of some assistance. Any records of coolant changes?
Yes actually—after The Car Care Nut had his big story about waiting 100K like Toyota recommends causing head gasket issues I had my independent do a coolant flush/change at the 60k oil change.
