I have a question concerning problem rust areas on these trucks. My truck's interior and exterior are in great shape. Very clean (as far as rust goes) under the truck and on the main body parts. I do, however, have some minor surface rust on the drivers and passager side door area where the plastic trim pieces protect the paint when you step into the truck. It seems like over the years the paid has chipped from the contact with the plastic.

My question is, should I try to repair it (sand slightly and re-paint) or just not mess with it. If it is a known trouble area for rust, I should proably try to repair it.

Thanks for the help.

That is not a common area for rust. Put some touch-up paint on it and be done with it.

Minor hijack but related topic. I have some light rust on the top edge of the rear hatch. I don't see anywhere that it is rubbing since it is where the hatch meets the roof. Has anyone else with an FZJ80 experienced this? I'm going to sand the edge down to shiny metal and touch it up.

Just curious if this is common or if maybe the PO slammed something in between the hatch and the roof? It almost the complete top edge from side to side.

Powell,

PO probably had something tied to the roof on a long trip.

Either that or the paint on the leading edge was thin from day-one. That area is difficult to spray and the finish is thinnest right there.

I have the same problem with the sill trim on the driver's side of my '96. I popped the trim off and lightly sanded the rust then painted the entire strip with black rustoleum. My truck is dark green, so it isn't really noticeable. Anything you can do now can't hurt....wait too long and who knows??

I have that too but mine is on the back edge of the roof that faces the top edge of the rear hatch. Haven't had a chance to fix it yet but I was going to prep it and cover spray paint from one the aftermaket paint vendors you can sometimes find at the national chains.

Little Rust Spot On Roof

I recently took off my roof rack and discovered I had a little rust spot on the rear DS. I did not have rust on the nutserts but next to it. Would it just be best to sand down the little spot and just repaint w/ touch up paint? Would just repainting stop the rust?

Thanks

Steve.

Sanding to bare metal will usually get rid of the rust. You need to examing the area very carefully to be sure all the little pits of rust are gone. A little POR will seal, then touch-up paint.

I have not heard of any US racks that have been removed with zero rust and zero pad wear.
