I’m hoping I’m posting this in the correct place. I am very happy with my local Toyota dealer and I feel they did a good job diagnosing my issue with my ‘96 FZJ80 (attached. Center diff) but the cost to fix is outside my budget. I am not the most mechanical, so I’m wondering if anybody knows if there are some good Land Cruiser mechanics left in the Minneapolis area?

I seriously doubt the capabilities of this mechanic. Biggest clue not using specific terminology of components, proper testing procedures (logical progression) or knowledge how the entire CDL system works. Just measuring resistance of components is not sufficient. The guy just wants to swap parts at your expense. Leaving a connector unplugged is ignorance. Find a local Land Cruiser shop or specialist in your area via the Clubhouse section on this website.

There are also numerous threads in this section of the forum that you should read to gain the knowledge yourself and do some preliminary diagnostics.

Thanks for the reply. I did the troubleshooting using the steps on here. I confirmed everything works to the motor and I think It seems to be stuck in transition (Not enough to get the light and turn off the motor). I am a basic home mechanic and there are zero mechanics listed near me on the clubhouse so that’s why I tried my local Toyota dealer. I’m hoping somebody has used someone around here that they trust. I really appreciate your response and hopefully this gets the conversation going!

SIDCO 4x4 in Glencoe, MN. This is a fantastic off-road shop that had my bad actuator out and a new (used) actuator in in a couple of hours and for a reasonable price. Bench tested everything and I have my center diff operating like new. One mechanic owns a FZJ80. I cannot say enough good things about them. The shop does not look great from the outside but they are fixing and building off road trucks from custom built monster trucks to brand new lift kits on Jeeps, Tacomas, etc.
