I was wondering why the wrapped end goes opposite of the shackle end?
if the spring breaks, would'nt you want the wrap on the leading parts of the spring, ecpecialy on the front end if your shackles are up front.

i don't know, just thinking in type :D

The frame end locates the spring. The shackle end doesn't. The wrap is to keep everything roughly in place if you break the main leaf.

ok, i was thinking that if you broke a spring it would be better if the spring could stay out front/swing back.

i guess it makes sense, just courious...thanx mark

If you break the shackle end of the spring, the frame will come down on the spring end pretty much stay there if you are just driving the rig out/home. I've done it in a OEM configured '55 and not even realized that the spring was broken until I was off the trail and a few miles down the pavement. Drove it the rest of the way home with a little bit of cant to the steering wheel and a slight vaugeness to the steering response, but no big deal.

If the frame end had been loose instead, the axle would have been all crosed up and undrivable.

very cool, thanx for the responses.

mace, thats a jacked up spring, i see chicks driving heeps with springs that look like that

Thanks, I was very proud of it.

I did that backing up on Clawhammer..

Militarywrap belongs on the frame side ;)

As you "push" the front tires against a rock it drives the spring back against the fixed spring hanger. The military wrap keeps the mainleaf from bending at a 90deg angle like maces and mine in this pic....

FWIW the 36" tire on my cruiser, (spring under with the springs flipped so the axle is moved forward) would hit the fender well opening as the spring bent into a "J" shape...
