I still have to figured out what I can do about changing the 5 lug pattern to a 6 lug to match the landcruisers. And I haven't quite decided on what to do to get a little lift. It needs to sit about 2 inches higher. But there is no big rush with that stuff.

Nice to see a dedicated trailer forum. Seems it is quite the hot topic this time of year.

You can just change the hubs and swap the axle over
heres mine
Easy and cheap

I just went to my local trailer supply house (Henderson Wheel) and asked for an axle the width I wanted, with cruiser bolt pattern and springs rated to what I needed and sprung over. (the spring over gave me a couple inches of lift) I could have got brakes too, but decided not to. They even sell new spring mounting hardware and brackets. I think everything was about $150.00 too very reasonable.

Ditto... I did the exact same thing from the same place. I would do it again in a heartbeat too, the price was right and the quality is excellent.

Hi Paul

In your neck of the woods Standen has the parts you need. Check out this post: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/M101CDN/message/144

Wes,
I am quite sure you have seen the tow rig before. In it's virgin skin no less.
I decided to get some extra protection built around the trailer. Mostly for fun, but it should be functional to.

Here are a few more pics. Can't wait to use it.
damn, that is one cool looking trailer Paul...
congrates.

Trailer Lids,

I have a M101 CDN. I am thinking of having a rear door cut in. Also I will put some kind of tent set-up on the lid, then I will have some kind of rack system for the boat over the tent set up. How should I hinge the lid? Should it be to the side or open to the rear and why? Lots to think about here.

Paint is done - finally.

The new colour looks cool, but I am not decided on whether I like it better than the freeborn red. And it is a bit "glossy" for my taste. Oh well, it's only paint. The floor on the inside as well as the underside was linex'd (or something similar) and then painted over. As was the top of the lid inside where the cage mounts. That looks really cool. And it is supposed to be really durable that way. We'll see.

The good thing is that it was sandblasted and really well prepped, so if I want to paint it again I know I have a good base. The red was just falling off because it was painted over the old military green.

Please, I can't take any more comments about it looking like a coffin. My wife has been harrassing me about that already. All the tubing and hooks have been taken off and sent to the powdercoaters, which is why it looks coffin like. And I plan on gettting rid of the bodies as soon as possible.

Thanks for the tips about the axle stuff guys. Those of you that did the spring over, do you feel it is too high? I am only putting skinny 33's under there, which will give me about an inch lift, and I was thinking slightly longer shackles would do the trick. Anyways, I got time to think about it. I won't see the trailer for another couple weeks. Oh, thanks for reminding me about Standens Greg. I always forget about that place.

Gman, you will want to have the lid open from the side. Having a tailgated trailer and rear opening lid is just asking for trouble. You would have to climb over the tailgate and crawl to the front of the trailer to get those last few items, and when you crawl back (and if the hitch is undone) you flip the trailer backwards. As for the tent/boat setup, it may be hard to pull off. Your rack system for the boat would have to be really high (I am assuming that you are taking about a pop-up or unfolding type tent).
An aquaintance I knew a while ago set up his trailer with a lid and he had those roller bars on that for the canoe. That was nice because he didn't have to lift the boat very high. He also had an external roll cage set up and mounted a goofy looking home made tent on top of that.
So his set-up was: military trailer with a flat lid, canoe on the lid, external roll cage that just fit around his canoe, and a tent on that. Oh, and a really long tongue. I wish I had taken pictures. But it was a good system wth a low overall height. Just an idea. I don't know what type of boat you have.

Here are the pics.

Looks good. Not at all like a coffin

Very nice looking thou. Post a pic when you get the tubes put back on.

I'd be proud to be burried in that. If I keep on packing on the pounds, the size might be just right too.

I swaped my drums last night while doing the springover. It was dead simple. Standens occasionally has the drums. They charge about $90 for them but they're local to me so no shipping/border hassles.

Pics of my project are here

So Paul, is the 75 changing color too?

Dingdong,

Well I am going to have a tent pop-up system, then a rack over the top of the tent package for the boat. The rack system for the boat will come off, when camping. At present I have a 16' Riverhawk Fiberglass boat. ANY CHANCE YOU COULD CONTACT YOUR FRIEND AND SEE IF HE HAS PICTURES 0F HIS SET-UP?

Thanks
Gman

Bruce, you got a part number for the drums? Or better yet, did you pick up any extra? I saw the pics of your trailer, looking good.

Steve, I got your PM. Sorry it took so long but I am rarely around an internet connection. Yes I did track down Zack, the guy with the cool trailer canoe tent setup. He is one of those flakey hippie types. And of course, he doesn't have any pictures either. He actually forgot all about it. Apparently the trailer was built up for just that one trip, and then he sold it shortly afterwards. That boy has spent too much time in BC.

My trailer should be ready for me this weekend, and I might even be at home. I'll have more pics then.

Dingdong,

The lid for your M101CDN trailer is exactly the style I would like to build for my M101CDN. You wouldn't by chance have a dimensioned sketch and materials list for it? It is the best looking lid I have seen and I have been looking at lids for years!

Wizard,
the only drawings we did are on the back of a cigarette pack. We just walked around the trailer and I told Lyle what I wanted to use it for, how it should work, and that I wanted the angles of the trailer replicated - only upside down (if that makes sense). I get it back on monday and would be happy to measure it out for you.

Just a teaser pic. Gotta get packed up for work. Changing the lug pattern and getting some lift will have to wait for next month.

I like the colour, but the paint job sucks.

My friend/coworker is a hod rod guy. Having seen some of the stuff he has done with his cars and trucks, I asked him to make me a lid for my military trailer. I gave him a quick run down of what I was looking for and left my trailer with him. This is what I got. I am a happy camper. :)

All nuts are captured (welded in place), it opens nice all the way up and the gas struts assist alot (maybe a bit too much). It locks, and once locked none of the bolts are accessable. He figures the top cage to be good for 400 lbs.

I came across these pictures that lead me to this site. As the latest owner I thought I would share a picture with you. Would be awesome to chat with you about this built sometime

When this thread first appeared back in 2006 I really liked the design of that lid. I took the pictures to several fabricators around town to see if I could have one made. The estimates I got were from $1500 to $2350. I only paid $975 for my trailer! And that was back I 2006. I would hate to see what it would cost now. But I would still love to have a lid like that!

Honestly its a beautiful lid however after using it as an expedition trailer I'm thinking of going to a something more like this high lid and creating side doors that can fold down for use as a prep table and can have all my cooking gear and light things like chairs stored in the lid section well being able to lift the lid and access heavier things in the bottom when needed. The extra height also will allow RTT to be high enough to allow usable space under the open tent and allow enough height on other side for an awning. Both issues with a low lid. I'm currently on the hunt for a second M101 to do this on. But might just end up modifying the one i have.
