Bit of a personal post, have to vent, cant do it on Facebook since i have a lot of co-workers on there. Had a great time this weekend even if i did get roped into a con call on thursday. Walked in this AM to news that i may be in need of a new job in the next few months (all of us will). Cant go much into detail but it is a bummer for sure. Throws any future trips into limbo and the cruiser sidelined on any work needed. Im still in shock since ive been with these guys for almost 15 years, almost unheardof in this day and age. Ill be updating my resume and linkedin, while we dont know the exact fate of the site, spin off, shutdown or sold, it did come as a surprise. I know a lot of you guys are in IT, once i get my s*** together, i might be reaching out. Im not too worried as we can get by with Tracys paycheck so not too worried about that... If anyone knows a good resume resource, please let me know, its been 14 years since i last updated :-(

The bad part is they probably will be asking me to move to San Diego, and while I appreciate the company willing to keep me, Tracy found her dream job and even though her pay is a little less than half, I cant ask her to move as she has been the happiest ive seen her in a while with her job. Its kind of surreal. Im not the one not to ask for advice, so if you guys have been through similar, id love to hear from you, pm if you need to.

Things might turn out OK, of course management is spinning this as an opportunity, we just went through a large layoff earlier this month, so after that stress and thinking that you made it through that, then reading the email that we received saturday... i dont know, its a punch in the gut. Feel free to move this post to a more appropriate area, i do feel better after writing this, and i appreciate the opportunity to vent.

Beers at the next meet and greet?

Best that I can tell you is that what is, is. Put this experience behind you and step out off the spot that you have occupied for 15 years. I can tell you from experience that you are not limited by your present work experience as to what direction you can go, you can go in any direction you choose.

In 08 I had been working as an architect for 5 years. I say "working as" because I do not have a degree and am completely self taught. I had a structural engineer review and stamp my plans. When all crashed in 08 the phone stopped ringing and I started building bumpers etc for folks that had seen mine and wanted similar, I ended up here. I built custom RC helicopter equipment and competition RC aircraft for several years for a living, was a general contractor and a builder.

My point is, do not limit yourself by what you currently do. Look sideways. I am now doing what I wanted to do when I was a kid. I still am that kid. Darin is off jumping out of planes fighting fires. What does the kid in you really want to do? What stands between you and doing it? If I can build a business around drawing blueprints, how hard can what you want to do be? :)

Assuming you're on Linkedin - connect with me: James Urquhart
I'm pretty good with resumes - If you wanna take a stab at pulling together the basics I could probably take a stab at editing it.
And - sorry to hear that. Been there a couple times and it sucks.

Also: Good choice not wanting to pull the wife out of her dream job. You'd regret that.

We'll talk, Cisco is always hiring in some form.

Can take a look at your resume. A previous role had me traveling around a decent amount doing recruiting.

I work with a company that is expanding in Charlotte alone by 2000 positions and has multiple national+regional offices (and some remote) - pm me and I’ll refer you for positions internally

PM me I can help you - I know of a company that’s expanding on a large scale and very profitable

Sorry to hear about that news. Give yourself a time limit (the shorter the better) to get all your worrying and fretting done. Worrying wont change the outcome, but what you can do in the meantime can. Put the energy into something productive. If youre into IT stuff, a PMP cert is a good feather. Any Cisco cert has some merit. Six Sigma certs are good for some companies. I heard some guy just wrote a book about it..... ;) Network security is going to have a steady workflow (at least as steady as any IT related job can these days with automation worming their ways in).

Our company has been parsing down roughly 7% a year. I wish I could say, come on over...but my team lost 13 this last go around in Feb. Id take a look at your resume, but its been a long time since i did our old organizations technical interviews...im sure the questions I'd ask are long gone obsolete.

Best of luck.

@AndrewHadji i don't remember what you do for the Q, but 1) have you explored/asked about working remote? and 2) I'm at Red Hat IT for 12 yrs now, if there's a potential fit with your skills please PM me.

I meant to tell you that I am going to the RedHat Summit next week in San Francisco.

Vent away

There are a few of us on here that have been where you are it sucks but will get better. Sent you a PM.

My group at NetApp is in a big hiring push right now. If you have storage experience and/or have done consultancy work then send me your resume. Fifteen years with one employer is definitely rare in IT. I expect to have to change jobs every 4 - 5 years. Damn casino economy.

So updating everyone with what i can divulge

Looks like things have turned a tad more positive, there are plans in place for the likely scenarios, all of which include me and some of my team, so thats good. Whats still up in the air is who are we going to work for. The better part of the problem, which still sucks but better than no job, is we will need to make a choice if our group does get purchased, on staying or going to the newco. The good thing is each manager is fighting to get the best people either to stay or to go.

Its not 100 % a done deal, but we will know more in the coming weeks. So resume still is being worked on this week. Ive updated my linked in, feel free to add

With enough managerial and sr leadership "support", they may allow you to work remote/telecommute. Would save the company a bunch on relocation packages (and salary adjustments if moving to some stupid expensive place like Cali) if they move you, and allow you to keep your current quality of life/work-life benefits that has allowed you to be a successful 15+ year employee.

Best of luck Andrew

Run spellchecker through linked in, if I can find a typo, any half bland Cuban old man can

Thats how i spell my last name i swear!

Don't feel bad, I was a building contractor in the late 80s worked under my own name had lawn sides made up and my trucks lettered. About 6 months after I got the signs and trucks done I was remodeling my own house and had a sign out on the lawn. I was cutting the grass, heading for the sign and I see it. Stanely Ely. Nah it cant be, so I go around the house and see the truck, same thing. All the right letters, just off a bit on the order.

Disclaimer, Stanley is spelled with the e between the L and Y

I disagree, name is nothing important. We started our business with our initials, Ian Stephen and Izzy Sanchez, so it became ISIS. Since we started, ISIS has been getting tons of attention by all media, and we even get government officials trying to get in touch, overwhelming amount of calls. ISIS was the best decision for company name we could have done!:flipoff2:
