Any of guys going camping during the upcoming holiday weekend? I was thinking of heading south to the Water Canyon CG, west of Socorro. We've never camped there and sounds like a decent amount of trail starts there and heads off into the Baldy mountains. I do have that Monday off from work :bounce:

Let me know.

We are committed to Silver City for that weekend, Blues Festival and the Gila. I have been over north Baldy twice, you can see the road going up South Baldy but we have never had the opportunity to try it out.

The trail over North Baldy offers some great views and some technical driving on parts of it, namely the area that climbs out of the arroyo up the side of the mountain.

It is a beautiful trail ride that can be made by any capable shorter wheelbase 4x4. A full size pickup would require a good driver also:flipoff2:

The weather should be great and so is the campground

Nice pics, not used to seeing so much green landscape!

Sorry I can't go with you---BUT---if you go up the North Baldy trail I think I left my folding camp chair right there by the mine shaft near the old wooden planks outside. I'd give you $5 reward for it!!??:crybaby::doh:
Have fun-it's a beautiful area. Oh and if you find the "South Baldy" trailhead please give us the coordinates as we would like to try that one someday.:bounce:

Phil,

You're a crackup my friend!! If I don't have any other vehicles to go with, I may end up somewhere else. Looking for ideas where there's water - maybe the Chama river up north? Looks like some possibilities near Lake Abiqui on the Chama river has possibilities.

Our plans have changed..................... no more Silver City and just too much too do in town, however.
I could and would come out on Saturday or Sunday to run over north Baldy with you. Let me know which way you are going and we can make a plan, where I show up for a day trip and then slink off into the night air like a ghost. It can be in any direction also, it doesn't have to be down south.

Terrill,

As of now, we're leaning toward a water based camping spot, possibly Chama river near Abiqui. Michele wants to sit near water and drink.....

Sweet, Rum and Water not mixed just intermingled.

I think I will concentrate on building my rollcage.

Did you make it Out?

Hey Vince,

Yes, we made it out to the CGs on CR151 (off of 84, north of Abiqui) as you suggested. Those campsites were very nice and we hardly encountered anyone there, much to my surprise and relief. We also checked out the monastery http://christdesert.org/ which was a very neat visit.

We're going to have to return to that area as a club - nice river access and not a lot of traffic. Unfortunately, the river is running at a good clip so playing in it is rather unsafe!! We tied a long rope to an inner tube for Isabelle to play in.

Curious, when does it get too hot to camp up there?
