Can you'all help me with some directions? Need to meet up with some wheelers at the luch spot we now use on the trail.
I believe theres some service road(s) that tie into that big open area where we take lunch.
I'm meeting them or cutting in there because I won't be starting at the trailhead with them. I have a morning engagement and will be several hours late and figures that'd be a good spot to hook in. Would like to run the whole thing but if I start at the begining I'll be running the whole thing by my self which isn't a problem but a bit lonley. It's worth at least 1/2 a run as some will be staying over night. Might just run it backwards Sunday. We'll see.
Thanks mates,

Hey Russ, not sure it helps, and I dont know the spot, but here is the path of the trail and fireroad in google earth.

Some more info:

Beginning of trail: 42° 2'3.55"N 123°45'30.87"W

Lunch landing: 42° 1'52.19"N 123°50'30.54"W

Big sluice: 42° 0'39.41"N 123°55'1.63"W

End of trail/saddle: 41°59'13.50"N 123°55'57.32"W

Sourdough: 42° 1'15.92"N 123°57'58.09"W

Whatever that link is is not the sluice. Looks the same but it's not. Edit: Looks like it's shortly after the lunch landing... I think I know what it is, but that doesn't matter... It's not the sluice.

Dude, you're killing me with the long/lat. Remember me? The older guy! Analog baby, analog.:D

okay, go to the big tree and hang a left.

after you see two big rocks and a dirt pile, turn right.

go till you think you went too far, then go a bit further.

one more right by the scraggly tree and youre there :flipoff2:

Well if you're coming in the fire road... you take a right instead of a left.... at about 9.3 miles past the beginning of the trail... Then it's about 2 miles past that turn to the landing.

I don't know if they are labeled but it's "Nat For Dev Rd 112"

LOL Dude I thought long and lat WErE analog LOL. Ok there is road/trail between the fireroad and the mcgrew, that is basically that half way point from what I know.

Fireroad turn off to head up to the half way point on mcgrew should be 42*00'41.45" N, 123* 50'06.46" W.

Sorry all I got. I haven't taken it.

In the pic below the bottom road is the fire service road 4402, the top is the mcgrew trail.
halfway.webp

So, I'm not going to find a bit shorter way in from the Cali side?
If not that's cool. I'll just be ding dang late. :o

You can come up from Patrick's Creek lodge, there is an intersection at a point on the FS roads out from the "Saddle". I have never driven that way but the intersection was well posted on the way out. I don't know where it is in relation to the road that will take you back up to the ridge where the new lunch spot is... Sorry but all my maps are in a book or I would post up...

:) Thanks mates. Very helpful. Now to pull it off.

Hey Russ,

Kief is on the right track. Patricks Creek Road to the FS route will save you about 45 minute to an hour if you're coming from Crescent City. This intersection is as obvious as it gets. Last I was there, it has a mileage sign from that point to O'Brien and you can subtract that from what Jerod's giving you (he's also right). With these two reference points, it should be pretty easy for you. But, I've also just e-mailed you a pretty good map with further instruction. Have fun.

Let me just start by saying, I relied on myself for navigation. First mistake.
Also, when anyone includes the statement, "last time I was there", be sure to ask how long last time was.:grinpimp:

Left the house at 11 a.m. after HSU's 2010 a.m. graduation session my niece was in and made good time to the Patricks Creek Rd. turn. No problemo.
Came to the first intersection... no mileage sign. The post was still there but...:hhmm:
Phone call to the wife to review posts on the directions, review the map and as luck would have it, i chose RH fork which turned out correct.
Next intersection was confusing. There were some switchbacks on either side that hooked into the road that curved through the area. Sadly, the only sign around and the one I went for said Sourdough 13 miles. Was figuring 5 from the saddle to camp so 13 minus 5 should be 8. Right? Well, I guess I thought this would bring me out at the saddle and I'd take the road east that 'would intersect 112 to the lunch spot. Wrong. As you may have guessed, I came in on the road that goes to 112. Quite a bit crappier road than I imagined especially compared to the section out to California from the saddle. Went the wrong direction at the switchback intersection. :o Next time.
So, having received a text from Keith wondering if I was close and wasn't even close to the saddle, I tried to text at the saddle. Nothing. Soooo, I headed up the trail to meet them. Past the sluice, down the hill a ways and on a narrow tight area we met. Back at the sluice one of the other club members(read: jeep owner;)) broke. Not real severe but we had to lash a strap for a bit then he was able to limp home in 2wheel drive.
Keith, Kyle(son) and myself were the only campers and except for one car with 2 people, we had the camp to ourselves. Quit nice and different.:p
Long day, wrong direction taken and just a little wheelin made for an interesting trip to the Mcgrew.
Do it again in a heartbeat!
