Have an 81 so has the different triangular tire carrier on back. Curious to max weight that people have seen in the past. Right now, I have a BFG-TA 33x10.5-15 on stock steelie (75.5 lbs maybe?) and has been fine.

Looking to add a rotopax and strap mount and may be another 30lbs max.

How hard do you push the rig off road? If you are a low and slow guy, it will likely be fine. Weight up close to the rig is easier to carry - those gas cans move the weight away from the rig. I'd look at the hinges and the mounting backing plate inside the cab every so often to look for cracking/metal fatigue

Hey Charlie, will not be doing any heavy off-roading…maybe light trails a couple times a year. Interested in what others say.

Interesting they don't show the backing/stiffer part inside the cab.

Static load of just hanging there is one thing. Taking the shot from a 2 foot drop at speed is another.
Moving the center of gravity out away from the hinges likely has as much effect as increasing the weight.

I'm not a fan of gas cans - much better to have it in an aux tank - no stinking fuel on your hands from leaking nozzles and the weight is down low at the axle. I liked my 12.5 gallon Datsun B210 tank I kluged in behind the rear axle. With some 2% resistors I was able to get the gas gauge to read from E which was empty to 1/2 which was full.
