I have a '99 LC with a 1.5 inch lift consisiting of sway away front torsion bars, rear OME springs (normal load) and OME shocks all around. I have not performed any other mods to the suspension. I have a arb bullbar with 12k winch on the front.

My question is this, can I run a 315/75 R 16 without any other suspension mods?

Here are the tire sizes from the nitto site for the Terra Grappler

295/75 R 16 - 33.27 by 11.73 - Price for 4 - $638 Installed at Discount Tire - Very Nice.
315/75 R 16 - 34.49 by 12.32 -

Thank you,

I don't know if you can run the 315 on ya truck.

I do know that I run Goodyear ATS 305/70R16 on my stock 99, wlo rubbing.

I run BFG 315. Little rub I can live with. Gearing is more of an issue for me!

How do you like the sway away? What size did you get and how much for just the front t bars?

Thanks.

You can run 315x75-16 the best by lowering your front diff by an inch (longer bolts, some shims, and cut and re-weld a front crossmember...about a 2-hour job), then re-tuning T-bars to the same angle (This results in an additional inch front lift and at no cost or compromise to CV angles). Next, add 20mm packers to the rear springs. Finally, re-adjust front wheel turn-stops so tires don't rub at full turn. Lastly, you may want to lower your rear bump-stops by 2-inches with 2x2x6 steel. This effects your flex very little but the rubbing is completely avoided. Overall, I have liked this setup compared to my old 33-inch tire setup. Happy wheeling

I'm thinking of going with the BF Goodrich AT's. How often do they have to be balanced? Is it more, less or about as frequent as LTX M/S's?

Depends on how many times each day on the trail you knock the weights off.... :)

ANYONE......with any experience with Sway Away? UZ did not chime in.

Thanks.

Juke,

The sway aways work well however when I replace them I will go with the torsion bars from slee offroad. It does stiffen up the ride and the handling feels tighter. I have them cranked to 1.5 inches over stock. I have had them on about 20k miles.

I hope this helps.

Thaks UZ. Not trying to bust your bal-s. Just trying to get something on in the very near future.

Why would you go with a different brand i.e. Slee's if the Sway Away worked well? AND, where did you buy your bars and what size? They list a 30 and 31 inch for the Land Cruiser.

Thanks.

J,

From my understanding the sway aways are not as heavy duty and begin to sag after awhile especially with an arb bullbar and m12k winch.

I bought a used set (however never installed) from a LC guy in TX. He bought them, then thought he was selling his 100 so he sold me his new (never installed) lift kit. He purchased the kit from Slee.

Slee will be able to help you on the length of the t-bars.

Also, spray wd40 or soemthing similiar all over the bolts to the t-bars a couple of days before trying to remove them. The guys installing my t-bars broke one of the bolts and had to order it from Japan.

I do not thik slee sells the sway away bar anymore considering they are selling their own now. It strikes me as odd that the factory Toyota bars are not that strong. Considering all of the hype on the oem quality, you would think that the torsion bars fall into the same arena. Has anyone broken one yet? Just curious.

Thanks UZ.

We are not selling Sway-a-way anymore. The quality was good, the problem was availability and pricing. They were not in stock most of the time, and everytime we ordered them the price was higher.

The oem ones are not week, they are just not enough to keep the front end up when adding bumpers and winches. The same deal as a soft coil spring that can not add enough load carrying capacity.

FYI, the LX470 torsion bar is even smaller than the 100 series one.

Slee:

Makes sense now. Thanks for the clarification. By the way, bought some Terra Grapplers....man are they sweet.

After having vibration problems with both Michelins and BFG's, I took my 98 LC to a shop with a Hunter Road Force balancing machine. (See Vibration between 62 and 65 mph thread.) The shop did a great job. It cost $80, but that includes all balancings for the life of the tires. And -- now my point -- the shop recommends balancing all off-road tires every 3000 miles. (I mentioned the fact that all future balancings are free so you'll know the advice wasn't necessarily based on fattening their own pockets.)
I had just bought the BFG's from a Tire Pro operation that has an excellent reputation. Still, the folks with the Hunter machine told me that every tire I had was out of balance, and the improvement in the vehicle's ride certainly supports their statement.

cruiser99,

That is a killer shot of your cruiser. I just lub it when folks be driven' the new ones. :D
