Lock tight they make it in different strengths some industry use only this no lock washer or lock nut ie. Airplanes. Decide how easy you want to be able to remove it later and use the appropriate lock tite with a lock nut a top lock nut will give you a couple more threads than a nylock if you want to keep your bolt you have now.
Are you referring to a double lock nut ? W locktite ?

Why don't you build/buy a receiver at the height you want and run the coupler in the standard upright position?
I've considered that...
But I will have to modify my bumper to do that.
and I've already modified/reinforced the bumper to be strong enough to tow.
Cutting all the bumper's reinforcement stuff off...
will be a pita for sure... and buying a new bumper for a fresh start is somewhat costly.
But running the receiver thru the license plate area...
may be what I need do for a better solution and still maintain use of the coupler in the upright position.

But I wanted to try an alternative before I have to tackle things in that way.

I often kick myself in the butt... for moving up to larger diameter tires on the hauler.
All was good... before I did that :frown:

appreciate your input

I meant the ball mount part only. Not the actual bumper/receiver. I cut and welded a new Pintle mount after lift/tires to keep my m101a level. Should not be hard with your combo to make the max coupler level too in its upright position.

You can buy almost anything here : http://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Ball_Mounts-sf-Fixed_Ball_Mount.aspx

Yes I was saying that if you didn't trust the red lock tite then you could also use a lock nut with it. A top lock nut is metal locking nut where the top thread of the nut expands when tightened to hold it in place. Its the same size as a regular nut so you wouldn't lose the extra threads it takes to hold a nylock nut.

Correctly they're referred to as "Prevailing Torque Lock Nuts" according to a retired Jet Engine Designer acquaintance, though they are also sometimes called a "Stover Nut" and all to frequently an "all-metal lock nut".

I use Loctite in a lot of places, but with only one fastener between me and a catastrophe I want something more mechanically positive. Castle nuts with cotter pins originated in aircraft. So did Safety Wire. My roll pin suggestion was merely a way to get nearly the same thing as a castle nut & cotter pin w/o needing to disassemble the assembly.

If you look at my camper build thread, you'll see that that I had to use a good sized raised hitch to get my camper level to my tow rig. Ironically, my tow rig is on 37s and the camper is on 33s, but it clears them without wheel wells.;)

where I'm going... least for now

Hopefully pics will better describe..
or a least entertain this thread.

2" drop, upright coupler... (coupler rises 2.5" at the pin OC )
~trailer sits tongue high~

5.25" drop upright coupler...
~I don't like that the drop sits this low, but trailer is closer to level~

0" rise, Inverted coupler... ( the coupler's pin drops 2.5" OC )
~inverted is nearly level as the 5.25 drop, with less anchor~

^ I'm trying to get as close to a level trailer as I can...
but minimize clearance or obstruction issues.
These pictures reflect an unloaded trailer and hauler...
Some added weight will likely bring it closer to level.
^ pictures above show without full load/weight to the trailer/hauler

Coupler modification...

Funny how you just seem to end up with a selection of sliders, isn't it? Started out and didn't have any, now I have too many, and I didn't buy any of them except for the first one.

With the full height Nylock why not buy another Nylock (they're only good for about 5 assembly/disassemblies before the nylon has taken a set that doesn't do much locking) and re-assemble it upside down with some Loctite (strength of your choice as any of them will be fine)? Call that good and go camping!

I only have one pair of sliders :D

But yeah... I hate that I have multitudes of ball drop mounts... when I only need use the one that works http://smilearchive.com/s/contrib/corky/smilies18.gif

I just got done driving down the hwy and rolling thru a trail...
and everything has stayed put... without a sign of concern.

I still intend to purchase an extended bolt...
and safety wire/pin the nut in place...

It really won't matter whether the bolt is head up or down...
If the nut fell off... the coupler could come apart regardless.

So the nut needs be safety wired or pinned... period.
Should even have been so with it's original design. IMO

Extended Tongue

Dell - would you mind posting some additional photos of the extended tongue you have installed on your trailer? I am looking to do something different to accommodate a Max Coupler without hacking up my M416 trailer.

From what I can tell, it looks like you have installed the second tongue in the unused mounting position for the lower lunette. How was this configured? Off the shelf of fabricated?

Thanks.

no... there is no lower mounting location for a lunette
on 1/4T trailers prior to the M416

My receiver tube is fabricated so that
it bolts to the drawbars using the original 5 bolt locations.
the primary bolt was just long enough...
but I purchased longer bolts for the other 4

click the link below in muh sig for more details and pictars
