Has anyone bought or sold an HDJ81 recently? I'm potentially looking to trade my '92 HDJ81 for a truck with a camper. I found a good candidate for a truck and the dealership also imports and sells JDM trucks. After sending pictures and notes on the condition they offered me $11k for my truck. Their rationale was that they'd need to put a few thousand into refreshing the truck, then list it for $19kish and hope to sell it somewhere in the middle. $19k seemed low to me as a starting price, especially if they're going to refresh the paint and fix the dents.

What does the market look like for older HDJ81's?

My truck currently has 256k KMs. The only mechanical thing that really needs to be fixed is the A/C doesn't work. Also there are some bumps and bruises on the exterior from actually using the truck and the paint is a bit worse for wear on the hood and roof.

Depends completely on the truck. Your mileage is about average, not really in the 'low miles' category. Many things add significant value to HDJ80s and HDJ81s. 1HDFTs fetch more $$ than 1HDTs. Same with manual transmissions, lockers, different body styles and factory accessories (barn doors, absence of flares, PTO and electric winches, ice boxes, dual fuel tanks, LHD vs RHD, rear A/C, to name a few). How well a truck has been maintained is also a huge factor.

Run of the mill, average HDJ81s from the early years (90-94) with an auto transmission, that have been well maintained (no rust) go in the 20k range. 11k seems low. Dealers can definitely get 20k+ for these trucks in the current market. Especially considering that a nice FJ80/FZJ80 is already creeping into that same price range.

RHD here in the US isn’t highly sought after. I still get all kinds of cheerful remarks. The “do you deliver mail” is getting pretty old though.
