Map lights/ambient lights

Just purchased an '08 LC and had a question about the overhead console.

I saw from a previous thread that the map light switches are, oddly enough, NOT backlit. The two shallow depressions (not the microphone) that I assumed were ambient lights--don't light up. I read through the owner's manual and I am not sure what they do.

Is this a case of burnt-out bulbs or are they somehow involved in temperature gauge or audio?

Nope, nothing in there even on the '13 models. I'm assuming there are probably clips in there and you need those access holes to get to them, or maybe it's a storage box for atoms
