:crybaby: so i tried to smog my truck the other day and found i have developed a nice exhaust leak. due to what i read here and was told by the muffler shop i had check it for me i sought a secound oppinion and was confirmed i get to deal with the dreaded combo mainfold milling extraviganze.

So i will be labeling everything with masking tape and trying to figure out a fool proof color or number system to make things easier on me.

so the manual every one uses in these situations, is it just the owners manual or is it like a dealership shop manual? I have the chiltons manual that covers it but, i don't wanna get it apart and never be able to put it back together again.

any body else in santa rosa or closer than arcata had to do this and what machine shop did you use?

also what else am i gunna need?
looking at my manual it looks like only a couple gagkets
the one to the block, the manifold gasket, and the one at the bottom that connects to the bown pipe?
do i need any special tools other than a truck load of someone elses patience cause i don't have much?

any thing else i should do while im in there and have stuff torn down?:beer::beer:

Here's link to a source fj40jim turned me onto for FelPro manifold gaskets. They're LOTS cheaper than I was able to buy local.

FSM is pretty good for geting all your vacuum hoses back to right. I've never looked in the Chilton's manual.

Get a new flange gasket for exhaust pipe, and OEM EGR tube gasket. I recently popped for SOR's stainless EGR tube and that solved a persistent leak I was having.

I'm no closer than Arcata so can't help you with local machine shop:frown:. There is a good one here though that milled my manifold combo for only $35.

I'll be following this thread very closely as I will be going through the same thing here very shortly. A question I have is : How do you know that you will require machining until you remove it? maybe a new gasket may solve the problem. I'll check my FSM to see if they call out a minimum flatness. Also, is the Felpro gasket superior to OEM? Some trivia-I was born in Santa Rosa.

butt, you were my closer than arcata referance as i read your old post the other day, ill look into the felpro. will i gain any thing other than virtual horse power by adding Sor's pretty pipe? how much was it btw?

mike i don't yet know that i need it machined but i did a lot of reading in the last few days and most that have had similar leakage have needed it so i figure if i have all my ducks in a row before i start ripping parts off well if i can save a round and not shoot one of the ducks then so be it.

a little for you i was born in redding.

That a heck of a coincidence!

yeah thats what i thought too, i saw your location and was gunna say i grew up there then i finished reading and was real surprised

actually correction i was not born in redding but i spent my young life there (4-17) i was born in fontana (LA ish)

what year do the smog laws time out at again? if your not regulated by the smog nazi's id slap a header on there and let the ponies breath but thats just me. when are you gunna do yours? i go home to visit not nearly enough but, id happily lend a hand if im around when it's happenen. what do yah do for fun and what do yah use your cruiser for?

We probably should do this via PM cuz not really technical, but I believe 1975 is the last year that did not require smog. My 40 is kinda too nice to do anything that might bend sheetmetal. Most extreme thing this is likely to see is Shasta Bally. Really nice of you to offer to help. For fun what I do is work on my FJ (what else)! How bout you?

Oh, just thought of one tip. I was advised here on mud (I think by Pighead) to buy new studs, nuts and washers.

The SOR stainles EGR pipe is kinda steep at $69, but it's got a much thicker flange where it mates to the manifold - a place where the stock tubes frequently fail as the flange is thin and prone to warpage. In my case the $$ was worth finally putting that damn leak behind me! Complete Engine in Arcata is the shop I've used for valve and manifold work and I'm so far a satisfied customer!

thanks butt, ill keep that rattling around in the long term storage but, im thinking of upgrading/replacing the whole exhaust that might be awhile as im plannen on the 2f-e before too long.
