Manifold Heat Shield Removal

I think everyone is over thinking the removal of these bolts. I've pulled a bunch of them off over the years and have never had any issues and I live in one of the worst environments for rust. In fact took all 6 out of a junkyard 80 last week that had no hood on it.

And how much of this magical oil do you think is going to get around the flange head of the bolt, past the corroded heat shield and down into the threaded portion of the manifold?

Unless these bolts have been previously removed they should come right out.

I had no problem removing mine from the truck to paint when i did the VC replacement. When reinstalling th heat shield i used anti seize on the bolts.

Hi guys -

I'm finding I'm needing to deal with this exhaust rattle.
Today I removed the shields and for kicks took some pics (attached).

You can see from the close-up that the top part of the sheild has rusted away so I guess I need to try to source these from Toyota.

good luck with that, mine were rusted bad and when i went to the local dealer , nothing in his parts list for a 96 matched what came off of mine, i gave up trying to replace those........

I'm hoping to get the MUD experts involved to order them from the gods...

I can't believe that everyone is just pulling them off and leaving them

+1

I was told the downpipe heatshields are part of the pipe and not available seperately. On a few trucks we've put muffler clamp u-bolts on to secure them when they rattle.

If yours are missing you can make some out of sheet steel :D

One of my shields rusted off and the other one rattled.. simple fix I bent the part the was rattling away from the pipe and poof no rattle... now I have to deal with the corroded O2 bung and ticking sound from the hole in the exhaust :crybaby:

Hi all, thanks for all the info.

My 2000 LX470 had an annoying rattle, which turned out to be from rusted out heat shields. They were in pretty bad shape, considering that the vehicle has only 150,000 miles on it. Screws/bolts were rusted up, so had to rip them out with pliers. Pic attached.

Here are the replacement part numbers, available at McGeorge Toyota:
- 18436-50040
- 18435-50080

I am debating if I should bother replacing them at all. I have 32" tires on the original 16" wheels, so a few more inches of ground clearance should reduce any chances of starting forest fires (what all the warnings are about!) ... so I think it should be fine. Anyone else left them off? Pls lmk. Thanks.

Wrong forum (this is the 80 series, you own a 100 series).

BTW, the part numbers (and shields you removed) are for Catalytic converters not exhaust manifold shields, which was the topic in this thread. Good job either way.
