Stuck between a rock and a hard place
Found another one of my trucks "buzz/rattle" sources. :)

The rear exhaust manifold heat shield had two of the three bolt-holes cracked all the way through (the shield, not the cast iron manifold). Essentially this was my buzz at 65mph cruising (2500rpm).

Decided to remove the shield, and wondering if I should get a new one from CDan, or perhaps just leave it out of the truck, and perhaps remove the front one, which is undamaged.

Remove the heat shield and replace with a burrito box. :D

I removed mine as rattle prevention 3 years ago...

But I don't have forced induction adding a heat trap over my exhaust, either..

What's a good method to remove the rusty bolts that hold the heat shield in place? Mine is starting to crack and thought I might try to repair or replace it at some point.

Soak it every hour or so with PB Blaster on a day you're not going to start it up and then Rick's suggestion. Also, nearly every one I've seen has a bit of cracking around the bolts - not the end of the world. If the bolts are tight and they're just the usual minor cracks radiating outward a half inch or so then they won't rattle around. It's a multiple layer steel sheet if I recall.

If the usual methods don't work would you use something like this Craftsman bolt out set?

Sure, but I'd be going for heat and PB Blaster, tapping on the bolt heads with a hammer and such before trashing the bolt heads with those. Last resort.

I'll try those suggestions. Thanks. This stuff any good?

Locktite has something similar designed specifically for removing bolts that have locktite applied and can't be broken via the normal banging/heat/etc methods.

If it works for that, I'd imagine it should work for this.

I haven't used either however.

On a similar note, what about the heat shields on the downpipe. Mine were rusted and rattling there and I have removed them. Is there a benefit to put some back on, or just run without them? I don't think I could put stock ones back in place, since the mounts had to be cut off because the bolts would not loosen.

Somewhere along it's life prior to my ownership my truck had the downpipe heatshields removed. I've never seen any reason to try and replace them. :meh:

I think everyone is over thinking the removal of these bolts. I've pulled a bunch of them off over the years and have never had any issues and I live in one of the worst environments for rust. In fact took all 6 out of a junkyard 80 last week that had no hood on it.

And how much of this magical oil do you think is going to get around the flange head of the bolt, past the corroded heat shield and down into the threaded portion of the manifold?

Unless these bolts have been previously removed they should come right out.

mine rattled and buzzed at 2500 rpm so i got the grinder onto that heat sheild sucker but now i think i need more heat shields it looks like a neon after some off road floggins

Landtank; had the same thought about the various penetrating oils, already used PB Blaster and then a 3/8 ratchet and socket, no luck. Would an impact wrench help or would it just round off the bolt head?

Hi guys -

I'm finding I'm needing to deal with this exhaust rattle.
Today I removed the shields and for kicks took some pics (attached).

You can see from the close-up that the top part of the sheild has rusted away so I guess I need to try to source these from Toyota.

My question is... on the lower part of the shield, it's attached to a 1/2 loop that appears to be (used to be) welded to the exhaust pipe... This look would effectively keeping the shields spaced away from the pipe by 1/8" or so.

one of the two welds in this loop is broken... should I try to find a new loop and have it rewelded to the pipe ? or just not worry about it and try to jam a spacer or metal in there or something?

p.s. I hate rattles...
