Hi Everyone! So I'm Matt, and I recently purchased my forst 80 series LC. It's a 1992, and it is currently in route from LA to Bath, Maine, where I live! The LC is a confirmed one owner rig that checks out solidly, carries 240,000 original miles, and possesses a rust free body and frame. I just had it broken down and looked over in detail before I committed to buying, and the guys at 2K Racing in Reseda felt it checked out nicely.

I had all plugs, wires, fluids, brakes switched out, and 33" Yokohama Geolanders were put on the stock rims, which I had them black out. (Pictures to come)

My first question to anyone that wants to answer - what is a better, or more preferred roof rack? My LC has a factory rack currently, and I have been looking at both the Yakima MegaWarrior, as well as the "new" 80 series only rack that Baja recently put out.

Any thoughts?

Thanks all, for reading!

Rip off the Runner Boards, Stereo, Speakers, Roof Rack, and Third Row Seats and Pitch.
Then comes the goodies.

Hey there Hornd - Yeah the running boards are not so hot. Rig gets delivered by next week and I'm curious as to the stereo and speakers. Any thoughts on that? I've been looking at Apple Carplay options and I def will need better jams in there.

Baja, PinSu (sp?), TrailTailor, etc are all good options. The factory rack sucks and prone to rust. The megawarrior is ok (I ran one for a awhile) but doesn't hold a lot of weight IMHO.

Thanks, Retrofive - yeah I caught something on this forum before I joined, talking about the new Baja rack for the 80. For a bit more $ than the megawarrior, it seems like a better overall investment to get started.

Congratulations! By LA you're buying in Los Angeles? Based on your reference to Reseda? So a California truck, or Louisiana truck? Welcome!

Will you sell that stuff? You won't make a bunch of money, but some people (like me) are working on restorations. Factory original parts may be worth keeping in the corner to help pay for mods down the road. I'm planning to reinstall factory running boards in the not too distant future, and then hide sliders underneath.

The Prinsu rack is nice and reviewers note a lack of wind noise and plenty of capacity. It'll handle more weight than I'd ever put up there, but being overly cautious I like to keep the center of gravity close to the ground - and right side up!

You're gonna have a blast with this thing in Maine! Stock up on fluid film - you're gonna need it! Either that or get on old school bug sprayer and use your old motor oil.

Congrats on your new to you Cruiser. The obsession has begun. Enjoy!

Hey Mechanist - thanks for the info! Yeap, bought it from Los Angeles. The price was good and the owner deal made it hard to pass up. Anything that I take off will be up for sale/gifting to other LC folks. Great advice about making a few bucks on the stuff. I'd like to replace the running boards with something that still allows me to step up, but more of a tubular pipe style possibly.

Thanks for the rack advice also. And the fluid film? It's funny you mentioned it, because I have almost felt a little guilty bringing the LC to my frigid part of the world; the last thing I would want to do is allow rust to set in on her when she's managed to go 24 years without any. So the film is the way to go?

Thanks Wayne. Pretty exciting. She's white, with blue grey interior. Feel grateful to have it. Well, I'll have it next week when it's delivered, but yeah I already feel obsessed on wanting to do some things to it. Mainly I want it to run solid, as it will be my DD. My commutes are close (10-15 miles) so it should be good.

I'm originally from SoCal so not too much experience on salt roads. I see lots of posts from the rust belt raving about fluid film. My gramps used an old school bug sprayer and old motor oil. He would annually spray down and wipe the undercarriage (and all exposed metal, wheel wells, etc.) on all his cars, trucks, and tractors in the early fall, but he lived in VA. I don't know how that would hold up in ME.

Hey, so can anyone tell me about the new Baja rack that I saw a thread for? Someone mentioned that Baja gave a forum rate for purchasing? And the rack isn't listed on the Baja site, so does anyone have order or link info?

Well you're spot on in theory. It gets pretty bad up here, due to a major over salting issue. I'm from Md. originally and they ziebart vehicles down there. I'm going to look into what folks do up this way and make sure I take care of it by Fall. Cool anecdote about your gramps!

Pioneers in Doors - Do a Search
Headunit - Choose your poison, but I would go Bluetooth or Front USB (no music on phone)
I got my connector thru Crutchfield who also has great tech support and was free shipping.

Almost everyone gets sliders. 4X4Labs makes them. A slider search should give you plenty of options

I used to live in Kittery, but only for 2 years. I wiped the frame down with oil on my VW (pain in the ass), but wasn't really there long enough for any rust to set in. I got rid of that VW as soon as possible upon moving back to SoCal.

Man, Kittery! Small world. Excited that the truck is a So. Cal. Yeah I'm getting info on what's best.

Stereo info sounds great. Def need Bluetooth and I've been checking out pioneer head units, and one from Alpine.

Checking out the sliders now

Believe it is Slee that makes more of step slider. My favorite remains MetalTech sliders.

Before you do anything:fix all issues underneath, then search Zoro FluidFilm on Ebay and get a gallon or 2 (Free Shipping).
Lots of videos on Youtube of how to do it. Wear Junk Clothes, put down cardboard.
Astro Sprayer if you have a compressor
You can preheat it if you want it to flow easier.
Gonna make a mess, but will halt the Rust.
Drop tire and do under there. Spray insides of fenders from inside. Do insides of doors. Front Fenders, etc....Keep off exhaust or let it burn off.

Welcome MaineCrusin, I'm in NH but I work in Kittery, get in touch if you need help or want to find trails. I'm also looking for a roof rack, I'll be interested in seeing what you decide.

Hey Alex - sounds good man. I'll def reach out. I'm leaning toward that new rack by Baja, but I'll keep you posted. I'm waiting to hear from a forum member on info about it. Hey what do you do with the undercoat in winter?
