I have a 90 4runner with the 6cyl engine that is losing oil pressure once it gets hot.A mechanic told me it is probably my main bearings going out.
My question is how much money am I looking spending to get them replaced or should I look at getting a used engine. I'm kind of broke right now so I might just sell it for parts If its going to cost a lot. Thanks

You can build just the bottom end. I'm no master mechanic, but I think if your crank is not scored at all (like from running it out of oil) you can replace the bearings, both rod and main.

What is "low" pressure? What weight oil do you run? For a bandaid, you could always run some 15w-40 Rotella.

If you buy a used engine - don't get another 3.0.

Bearings are not too expensive, it's the labor!

The oil pressure goes up to about 2 thirds on the gauge till it gets warm then it will barely get above a third.I am runnung 10/30 right now but I am dropping in 20/50 in the morning. Hopefully that will help it.

If I have to get another engine will the 22re fit my drivetrain? I know that is a much more reliable engine.

Don't trust that OE guage. They are not as reliable as the rest of your Toyota. Get a mechanical one put in and then see what you really have. BTW, engines do not need as mush oil pressure as you would think. A SBC can run on single digit pressures for a long long long time.

Your engine is fine if it's about 30 PSI or so.

If doing a swap, honestly I think the 3.4 V6 is a good option, or a 4.3 Chevy.
