The Upper, and Lower, Madison gets fished pretty hard. Especially with more visitors year over year to Yellowstone, and more locals out this summer curbing the covid crazies. I don't think anyone will really ever be happy about new rules. But you have to start somewhere.
Is the Bitterroot having issues like this too?

Yes, additional regs were placed on the West Fork of the Bitterroot a couple of years ago similar to what they are proposing on the Madison. Basically limiting sections of the river off limits one day a week to floating. (Maybe just to outfitters) And placing a cap on the number of floats outfitters can do.

We definitely don't have the same number of people on the river here though, only a fraction, but the river is smaller as well.

Enjoy it while it lasts, we’ll be like Colorado soon enough. Secrets out, they’re coming to Montana and Idaho in droves... it won’t stop. we lived in Colorado for 14 years, the people’s love for the outdoors started to kill the outdoors. Hikes were like escalators, wall to wall people. A trip to ski went from an honest 2 hour drive to 4 because of traffic.

We left to come up here and try to beat the rush, raise our kids in a non urban environment. We feel fortunate to be here. We love it.

When we tubed the Madison in mid August this summer there wereat least 1,000 people on the water over a 6 mile stretch. No exaggeration, it was nuts. Sadly it’s gonna get crowded and it’ll need to be regulated to keep this awesome state awesome.

especially after the reefer was legalized.

Yeah, I hiked a number of the 14'ers when I lived in Colorado, it was always an issue hiking the primary routes. I did Elbert from the back side, Black Cloud trail if I remember right, never saw a soul until I summited.

The pot thing really hosed Colorado. So many people poured into the state and especially downtown just for the weed. Outdoor restaurants took a huge hit as addicts and transients became common place, harrassing people while they ate.

They talk about it like it’s a huge money maker for the state but it’s a cash business and the banks won’t touch the money since it’s still a federally controlled substance. Colorado saw a fraction of the expected tax revenue while a pot shop opened on every corner of the city. Somebody was making money but it wasn’t the state.

Oregon just went full crazy with their new ballot measures, it won’t take long to see those policies mature.

I’m all for individual liberty but the pot thing really messed up Colorado on multiple levels. I was bummed to see it pass here but it is what it is. For good or for bad, we’ll sleep in the bed we make.
