Well after years of drooling over the builds of others I finally found the right project for myself. And as luck would have it the seller had two of them so I told my brother and we bought them. I ran up to Mount Rainier (at least almost all the way there) and picked them up. Since my brother already had a commitment the night I found them for sale I went and picked them both up.

Driving home with them stacked was fun because the springs and shocks are so old they would sway for a really long time after each turn. But we made it home safely.

My only hesitation with starting a build thread is the commitment. But I am so thankful for all of the other threads that have given me ideas that I figured I kind of owed it back to the community of trailer lovers.

Ok. For those who are wondering this trailer is going to be a pretty simple gear hauler.

Phase 1 is Frame work.

A. I am going to extend out the tongue possibly using a system that allows the tongue to be extended off road and pushed back in for highways speeds. Possibly by just extending it permanently.
B. I might be putting on a bumper with a swing away tire carrier for my spare. I don't like the idea of something permanent up front because I have other plans there, and I don't want to commit to putting it underneath because I want to keep my clearance open.
C. I need to purchase a new axle, springs and possibly shocks. New rims and tires. Probably keep this part simple. My current intentions are to install it axle under at this point.
D. Possibly create a spot for a propane tank and lock box on the tongue. The lock box will be used for future mods and just secure storage.
E. I am going to put Jerry cans in front of the fenders but I think this will be part of Phase 3 after all tub work is done.
F. I think I am going to have to replace that front brace on the Frame that holds the tub down. It is pretty rusted and if I am already going to have it taken apart I might as well put something on there that does not have serious corrosion issues.
G. I am going to have the end color of the frame be black but might hold off on doing anything until the tub is ready.

Phase 2 is Tub work.

A. I have some serious rust issues here. At the front of the tub there is basically no metal connecting the floor to the front edge. I have thought about buying a stamped tub base and front but don't think I will get the value out of it since I am not doing an official restore. Instead I am going to put down something flat, possibly diamond plated if I can get the right deal.
B. The front panel has serious problems about 1/4th of the way up. My current intentions are to just replace the entire front. The only thing I want to keep on that are the tie down points. I am not to concerned with keeping the stamped appearance.
C. As you can see my trailer has to real side; I need to create and build a back gate. I thought about sealing it off and making the tub amphibious but my wife is not to happy about having to lift all of the camping gear out of the tub. Especially if it is lifted off the ground with an axle under setup. So I am going to end up putting the gate on. I am thinking at this point the gate will fold down while the tire carrier will swing to the side. I might be creating to much work here with both of these systems but if nothing else it should be fun.
D. The stock M100 comes with round fenders. These are actually in suprisingly good shape; however I prefer the look of the M416 fenders and so I am going to scrap mine (PM me if you want them) and build new ones. I figured while I was at this I am going to build my Jerry can holders and possibly (still undecided) build extensions taking the fenders all the way to the rear of the trailer. This will make it look similar to a Sierra 4X4 trailer with their Nerfbars; the only difference being mine are not going to be built with round tubing.
E. The stock M100 (at least mine) does not come with tabs to bolt the tub down. It is welded all around with points about 8 inches apart. I am going to cut those off and build some tabs to make the tub removable. I really have no reason for this but thought that later on it would be cool if I built a flatbed and other accessories for the frame to be even more multi-purpose.
F. After the frame and tub are done I am going to take it in to get blasted. I am not sure yet if I am going to powder coat or use a cheaper system. The trailer is going to be stored outside in my side yard and I want to do whatever is going to protect it the longest...oh and that I can afford.
G. I am probably going to paint the tub OD Green because my Land Rover is green and together I think they would look great.

Phase 3 is a Top.

My ideas here at not as defined, but I have a few rattling around in my head. I am thinking about using aluminum here but not set on anything really.

A. My preference is to build a top that mirrors the upper shape of the tub in reverse. Many builders have done this and it looks the best in my opinion.
B. I am thinking I will need to put in some gas struts because I was intending on building a simple bike rack on the top of...the top. I have a few clients who own Bike shops and can get some fork mounts and tie down systems for pretty cheap from their vendors.
C. Paint to match the tub.

Well those are my plans. I hope to have the tub back on the frame and rolling at least by the end of May. That is our first trip this year that requires some serious camping gear.

I hope to keep the thread pick heavy but if there is anything you folks would like to see that I forgot to capture let me know.

Last weekend we broke down the axle, tires and got one fender off before the darkness took over. I am going to try to finish taking it apart this week and hopefully start on metal work on the frame before April.

Alright wish me luck.

I should apologize for the small pics; for some reason I did not have enough space for even one more large pic. Probably because I am new to the thread. If anyone wants links to them in flikr let me know.

Super cool find!
Lot of work there and I for one would love to see the pics.
Thanks for posting.

Great little trailers with so many build options.
Check out expeditionPortal.com "trailer" for other ideas.

Keep us posted on the build.

Frame deconstruction updates.

I spent a few hours this weekend tearing apart more of the frame. Out of all the bolts I worked through only 6 of them came off using the impact wrench. The rest had to be ground down.

Here are some updated photos.

StandInGarage..03.17.12 by XRover, on Flickr

This is a test using Flickr to host my photos. I will edit it out if it does not work.

The only thing I was really wanting to mention at this point is that I intend to save the jack stand because I think they keep a lot of the original character. I will have to extend it slightly if we go with a Axle under setup though; but that's for another day.

Just realized there is not a feature to edit posts...at least that is what I understand from reading some of the threads about posting limit enforcement.

So instead of editing I am going to simply add a few items here.

First is the obligatory "my trailer is upside down in my garage" photo.

InsideGarage..03.17.12 by XRover, on Flickr

Seems like the Flickr hosting is working for me. It is actually much simpler than I thought. You just need to know what code to copy and paste.

This photo also shows the shocks taken off. I spent most of Saturday morning working on those and all the small screws and nuts holding the wiring system in place.

I removed the stuck fender (one of the only bolts that actually unscrewed) but the consequence of that is my house now smells like PB.

My brother helped me tear my trailer down a bit last weekend so I went over to his place this weekend and we got the shocks, springs and axle removed from his trailer.

I will link to his thread when he sets one up.

We noticed something funny though when we were taking his apart. It seems as though the shock mount attached to the frame was ripped off of the frame at some point. And the previous owners solution to keep the springs from fully depressing was to duct tape a log to the top of the axle. On top of the duct tape though as an added measure of protection he had a leather belt holding the log to the axle. Wow. We both got a good laugh out of that...then we realized that I drove three hours pulling his trailer with my trailer on top of it. Glad I made it home without any problems.

That is all for this update. I will show more pictures after I get the tongue and frame removed. Hopefully by next weekend.

No pictures this time but I thought I would do an update. I got everything removed off of the trailer except the frame. I was thinking it would be a similar setup to the M416...wrong. Turns out the thing is welded in about a hundred places. I cut down all of the exterior welds as well as the welds on one of the support bars.

I am going to work on the other support bar this week and try to get to the welds that are on the edges of the frame but hard to reach. Might have to use my old dremel or something because when I try to get in there with my Dewalt Grinder I can't really see what I am doing.

I mocked up my frame changes as well as a lid on paper. No real measurements but just getting a feel for where I am and where I want to be. I will probably load those up here before I do the work just to hear some ideas from others.

I am going to also create a classified ad for the landing leg, lunette support bracket and the support leg bracket. I have one forum member here who has expressed an interest in those parts but nothing is finalized.

Long month, but it is finally time for another update.

Here is where the trailer stands.

I was able to get the tub off but after messing around with the many welds on that guy I just ended up cutting the tub (planned on replacing the bottom pan anyways) just above the frame.

Came off pretty quick after that. Cleaned up all the welds that were left.

Now I need to start really getting serious about how I am going to finish off this frame.

I am attaching a scan of some of my ideas. I should probably let you know the "water marks" are because I am too cheap to spring for the really good scanning software. So I use it but you can see why its free to use.

Frame Design Ideas-page-001 by XRover, on Flickr

Well those are the basic ideas. I still need to remove the Tongue Supports and re-position them in order to make sure they fit and create the right length tongue. I am mostly concerned with it creating a little room in order to fit a small box that I plan to fab up.

Any suggestions on extra support for the tongue or bumper? Thoughts and ideas are welcome for sure.

I wouldn't extend the rear bumper further rearward...
as I'd think it would limit the exit angle out back
especially during any extreme trail duty.
I would think to reinforce that rear support for the receiver
and then add a skid plate of sorts out back.
Not sure why you think you need/want
to install an extended rear bumper ?

I'd also think of "C" channeling the frame to give that more
strength.

also reinforced my shock mount(s)...
for spacing and added support with the "C" channel work

(was welded into position later)

Oh... and instead of tossing out the original lunette hitch mount...
I just incorporated that... in case the primary were to fail...
I'd still be able to mount up to the pintle and get 'er home.

oh.. and I didn't find a reply in my PM box !?

Responded. Thanks.

I see your point on departure angle for the rear, But a rear bumper would look good and be useful.
You could make it into the rear frame rail.

That picture is great and basically what I was going to shoot for. My only question is whether our not it could take some abuse. There is not very much support between the bumper and the rear of the frame.

Is there by chance a name or stock number on the installed shocks on the trailer. and if not would you mind dimensioning them for me, Length eye to eye etc, Thanks in advance. Jim C.

Here's another option if you don't want an external bumper. It's tied to the crossmember in front of the rear frame piece.

That is great looking. I hope I can make my mods look that clean. Is there a flat piece bolted to the frame and welded to the hitch extension? Can you shoot us a picture and load it up here?
