I don't know anything about the 70 series. There is one listed for sale (LX73, 1987) close to me. I thought I would check it out as the price seems pretty fair. 165K miles, 2.4 turbo diesel.

Any thoughts? Specific things to look for other than the normal checks for rust, etc.?

Thanks!

we will need to have a picture or a link to the for sale ad to give you some good info. "LX73" isnt a usual way to describe any land cruiser 70 series. Maybe they meant L J since it has the 2.4 turbo diesel. if so that is a light duty model and should go for less money than a heavy duty model like a BJ, HJ, or HZJ etc...

Okay, it is an LJ. That motor is prone to problems compared to the engines that come in heavy duty models. It seems to be priced pretty fair though. The Light duty models are more of a comfortable ride since they are not solid axle. Edit: me big dummy.
Also, they usually feature more power options / "luxury" features (still pretty basic though).

If I was you I would research light vs heavy duty 70 seires pros and cons and decide which sounds like the right type of cruiser for you.

Heavy duty models are usually more associated with being bullet proof, no nonsense tools to take into the middle of nowhere. Light duty are slightly more comfortable to drive around town but still very capable off road. That is probably the most vague summary ever of the two but you get the idea.

As for what to look for on that model if you want to buy it I would place most of the importance on the maintenance history of the engine.

The LJ7x Cruisers do have a solid front axle, but they have coil suspension front and rear, giving them a better ride than their heavy duty counterparts.

The one here is an LJ73 with LX trim, thus the confusion over the name.

Is it just me or does it look like there has been some body work on the RH rear corner?

LJ73 has a live front axle...

Whoops! My fault fellas. I forgot they had the solid front axle just coils instead of leafs. Thanks for correcting that. I should have just held off until the LJ pros chimed in. I am a little overly chatty today I suppose :slap:

I have never driven a LJ73 but I don't really have any complaints about the ride quality of my leaf sprung front/rear FJ73. I can't imagine slow that thing will be with that motor though.

My stock LJ71 (same axles/suspension as the LJ73) rode & handled much nicer than my old stock trim BJ74. The 2.4 2L-TE motor wasn't terrible in terms of power as long as she wasn't loaded up too much (although my reference vehicles at that point were things like dad's old 2.8 non turbo diesel hilux :) & we don't have much in the way of high altitude roads in NZ) The big thing you need to know is that the 2L-TE motor has a terrible reputation for reliability compared with any other Toyota motor from the same era, work it too hard & you'll crack the head.

Cheers
Clint
