LX570 power tailgate not functioning (1 Viewer)

Think it was the hinges, the shock ends, and the third bar going into the panel on the right side. Just a little white lithium grease sprayed while moving the hatch.

Since we are on the topic, has anyone replaced the struts on either side of the rear tailgate? Do they have to be Lexus branded or anything special? Or can you get away with aftermarket normal tailgate struts? Thanks again.
I just replaced mine last week. My trunk was opening but would not open all the way. Due to the fact that it has an electrical assist, I ended up ordering OEM struts through parts.lexus.com. If you look at different dealerships on the website, you can typically find one or two that are much cheaper than the others. I got the best deal through Jim Hudson Lexus of Augusta. However, it will be cheaper to do a set on Amazon.

There are also 3 or 4 different strut variations for the LX570 depending on your vehicle production date so just keep that in mind.

Repair is fairly straight-forward. I had both sides done in 45-60 minutes.

Bringing this up so as not to start a new related one.

Mine is no longer closing. Opens perfectly (replaced struts last year). The mechanism starts, then seems to meet resistance, then beeps and gives up. Could it be the motor? Any suggestions? 160k miles on it.

Must be the motor inside the panel.

as far as the pneumatic tubes, i strongly advise to ONLY use OEM.
got some aftermarket tubes for a RX350 liftgate from auto zone. looked legit. but a few months later one disengaged from the ball it was mounted on when i was opening the liftgate. luckily it did not punch out my eye or smash the liftgate window, but there was a lot of force in it as it jumped on its own.
go with OEM only, even if it does cost a little bit more.

Agreed. I replaced my struts with generic ones about 20k miles back. They didn't last very long, but more importantly, likely stressed and damaged the tailgate actuator/motor because the lift struts force weren't calibrated to OEM specs. Then there's the subtle things about the buttery action of the OEM struts. Where the aftermarket ones initially open with large force, and then stutter step where they get to the end of the travel, the OEM unit opens linearly with soft damped action at the end of the stroke.

I just replace them with Tuff Support 612926 & 612927 (rockauto.com). They fix the very slow opening and never reaching the top. They do have force at the tipping point (when opening by hand) but they slow down well before reaching the top. Even if the motor fails because of them, if I add their cost and a new motor is still cheaper than a pair of new OEM struts at online discounted price.
On the outside they look same thickness, length, etc. as OEM. The only visual diff is the piston rod being black not chrome.

BTW is there a way to power open the tailgate from the outside w/o using the remote? There are two buttons on the tailgate but one is the lock (small one) and the larger one requires to press for unlock and lift the tailgate by hand. I'm not lazy or weak :) just wandering how it should work given this is not a new truck.

P.S. now I see that you LC guys are spoiled with $27 struts while us LX have to pay $65. Unfortunately the part numbers are different.

Where they not provided with the clip/pin/spring to prevent that? Or was the clip missing? Mine came with clips at both ends and there is no way the ball can come out of that socket unless the clip is removed.

Hi all,
because I keep my cars forever (never sold any) I know that I'll end up doing the same repair more than ones. To make it easier on myself the next time and probably many years into the future I tend to write down the procedure and store it in my car archives.
So here you have it as a PDF.

yes it had the clamshell clips. but it twisted itself in a way that the clip did not hold it. slight differences in how it was manufactured, vs OEM part, meant it did not stay on the ball.

reading the .pdf above, i should add that i did NOT replace the two balls, just popped on the replacement strut on top of the existing (worn) balls.

Has anyone tried to install a kick sensor on a 2008 era LX570. I have watched YouTube on all the after market ones but I cant see how they work when the doors are locked, to me the idea is I have my hands full so cant get to my keys to unlock the doors, trying to work out how to get it activated via the proximity key feature, does anyone know of a circuit that becomes active/live when the proximity key is in range (other than courtesy lights)

Hey guys dont mean to necropost here (is that the right term?) Anyway, was wondering if anyone knows what the little button beside the main tailgate button is for? I press mine and it does nothing. For a second I thought maybe the glass opened but thats not it. My power function also doesnt work to open only close but after reading this thread I will check the main button in the front. Mine is a 2013 FYI

So I installed these over 3 years ago and I am happy to report they have been flawless on our LX.

Meaning under the tailgate when it’s closed? Next to the main button to open it?

If so the little button locks the car if your key fob is with you while you press it.

Yes! Thanks lol. After about half an hour of dicking around I figured out thats what it is.

My rear hatch stooped beeping about 2 months ago, everything works as it should, is there a button that I pushed to turn on/off the beeps?
