Just got a 2013 LX and realized that the phone "holder" area just above the gear shift is probably for a iPhone 4. I am beginning the process of designing and 3D printing an upgraded holder for a iPhone 11 Pro and Pixel 4 XL. I have made significant progress on fitment, but will document it all before I finish.

I also want to try and add wireless Charging to it, but I haven't done that before and I don't know the interaction between the plastic and the charger, so TBD.

Count me interested. Where will this be installed on the center console?

The space in front of the shifter?

So this is the bottom plate that fits snuggly in the existing spot. The phone holder part will sit on top of that. Once all the pieces are prototyped, I will do one print of everything.

Yes look at Mad Tigers picture. I am trying to make it work with the rubber pad still in. I have already flared the long edges to fit pretty snuggly, but it is only about 2 mils deep.

@pound - I would love to see a solution that allows for use of small Toyota push switches in that space. Perhaps in combination with replacing the ash tray in that same region? Since you've got a base plate mocked up, perhaps it's possible to piggy-back on that for a switch panel print?

Yeah, can you really rough sketch what you are looking for?

I would either need an actual switch, a CAD drawing of it, or a very detailed measurement (especially of the clipping mechanism). I also don't want to rip up my console to see what's under there. Pictures of that would help.

To remove the ashtray area is the two padded sections (one each side) (clips). Unplug the start button. Remove the shifter handle or shift into D. I think then there are two screws, then pull on ashtray console firmly straight out (clips). Unplug the cig lighter and depending on year, the seat heater/cooler.
If it takes more than 90 seconds the second time, I'd be surprised. Took me maybe 10 min the first time because I hate breaking clips.

Thanks for the step by step grinchy. I will definitely get under there soon enough.

For right this second, my wife would kill me if I disassemble the car (We got it 3 days ago). I just was wondering if there is anything under the "phone holder" that would need to be designed around? Does the area under the rubber liner need to be cut out?

I’m interested, especially if there’s wireless charging. I hate not having a good place to put my phone.

I found a few disassembled wireless QI chargers today. It is looking to be pretty straightforward. Only issue is it will be externally powered from either USB or Lighter and removable. I don't want to cut into anything in the first week of owning the car.

Should seen my :princess: when I started pulling the rear bumper cover off. . . .

I think it is hard plastic, I haven't had that pad out, but it will be relatively straightforward to remove if necessary. If I recall there isn't much void area underneath. Quite a bit in the vertical area occupied by the HU.

Going to need to pick your brain soon. It will actually be my car when the wife is ready for the Suburban and I want to be ready.

So here is the prototype flatbed holder. It is clear of the gear shift and the aux/12v compartment. It fits both of our phones (iPhone 11 and Pixel 4 Xl)

It needs some curve underneath to match the car. I am going to start working on the holder that will sit at about 45 degrees.

All in all, it is functional. Trying to decide on color, height of the walls etc.

That looks great. May I suggest a cutout/clearance/standoff included so that the ECT button remains depressed. I rested my IP11 Max there on a road trip and it would constantly flip that switch back to the default position.

For color - matte black for me.

Yeah, it definitely covers the ECT button. I am ok personally not having access to it (even though I like the power setting with sport suspension(makes it feel more like the land cruiser)). I could do easily do a cut out so you could access the switch.

I want to see how the 45 degree angle holder sets up. It should be clear of everything.

This is the flatbed holder with an iPhone 11 Max.

It is pretty tight, but there are probably a few mils here and there to adjust

So slight detour, I finished up the prototype for the 3D printed sanitizer holder I was working on for the LX. It turned out well and is strong. It needs some rubber feet, but otherwise fitment is pretty darn good. I will get installed pics tomorrow.
