So i wanted my PCV valve replaced. 2019 LX570.

Dealer says it will be almost a thousand dollars, $10 for a new valve, and the rest in labor to remove the intake manifold. they say the valve is blocked by a section of the intake manifold.

Does this sound hinky? i saw a youtube, purportedly of an LX570, where all you needed was a long handled socket wrench to screw it out.
but the dealer was adamant about it.

Has anyone had their PCV valve replaced? Was it a major or minor operation?

It takes literally 20 minutes. You pull off the engine cover and it’s on the front of the intake surrounded by noise deadening foam.

Shame on them.

It's very very easy. No the intake does NOT need to come off.

You can pay me $500 including parts or do it yourself from above link :) , dont need to tighten much at all, hand tight only.

It's less than minor. Were I you, I'd be shopping for a new dealer or good indy shop.

My 1.5 cents:

Clearly he sees you…and probably all drivers of nice cars…as complete suckers, ripe for deception.

If this is a pattern for him, I would make my last exchange with him simply asking him to explain how he arrived at that price (6 hours labor??) and let him dig that hole.

Then…show him this thread…call his bluff…and either walk away, or ask to speak with his boss….then let his boss know the dude just lost your business permanently, unless he can recommend an honest service department alternative. Ask his boss if he condones these tactics of deception. Be polite, factual, and see what happens.

This crap needs to be called out regularly.

I did have to rip out a little of the foam to get to mine but other than that it is literally the easiest thing I’ve ever done to a vehicle. A pair of
Needle nose pliers and 10 minutes.

What an a hole for trying to screw you like that.

Should be some sort of investigative reporting piece. Agree to the work, and have a camera rolling to see what they do for your $1000, put it all over the local news and on the web when they charge you that price tag for the 20
minute job the tech does. Shady business like that is how dealerships get such a bad rap.

Hahahahaha

Please go back and show them this thread and video.

While certainly not necessary, I think the FSM calls for manifold removal to avoid damaging the piece of foam you have to push out of the way otherwise.

I’ll be first in line to claim a lot of dealers have no business working on vehicles, but in this case, sounds like they are going by the book (as in blame Toyota/Lexus). Not that I’m suggesting using them for this job. I’d find someone who is willing to push the foam aside and swap it in 10 min.

I think your assessment is fair, and that in light of this fair point, my earlier comments were too harsh against the service guy.

A number of Toyota’s by-the-book directions are like that. Another example is steering rack replacement. The Toyota “book” says engine removal (!!)is required…and that’s one way…but LC shops know there are other ways to access short of that, which are still a pain…bit not nearly as big a pain as engine removal…

I have friends and know family friends that are (or were previously dealer mechanics). The service desk may charge you flat rate, but the smart tech is going to do it the fastest way possible. My brother's best friend was the timing belt guru at the Dodge dealership he worked at - he did them so fast he always beat book rate by a massive margin, and made both himself and the dealership a lot of money. I wouldn't let this guy touch a vehicle of mine. :) Just because you are paying book rate, doesn't mean that is how they are going to do the work. Then again I could be wrong, especially since this is a Lexus, and they probably have a higher quality standard than some brand dealerships. But to take off the manifold to replace the PCV on a 200 series, c'mon man, that's ridiculous.

yeah, that is exactly what i expected.

in that first video he says "the toyota repair manual says to take off the intake manual, but you do not have to". I guess that is what the dealer was going on!

Lexus service tech did mine for free (I bought the part at the parts department for a few bucks) in the service drive after ripping a small piece of foam out.
i know. An actual $10 part taking $1000 for a lexus dealer to replace? Come on, MAN!

I am tempted to just do it myself. i have long sockets with flexible shafts. apparently it is only in hand tight

Why wouldn't you do it yourself?
just pay yourself the discounted rate of $500 for the service, and buy something nice for your truck with it. Maybe the Kaon inside rack?
