Hello all! Long time lurker, first time poster! This is where I plan to document and manage my build thread for my 2009 LX570! I have named him Rook and look forward to the adventures I will get to go on with him! The very first day I bought the car, I drove it from Nashville to Louisville, picked up a friend, and hit small trails in Eastern Kentucky on a camping trip for a few days. In those first 72 hours of ownership, I put the car to its tests, everything mechanical works, and 4lo in H mode is a blast! May have even tested the governor....

I purchased it in October of 2024 for 19k with 178k miles, currently at 187k. It was a bit of a risk, a large one at that. It had no documented repairs/maintenance since its 60k Mile mark, and I am the 3rd owner since that time. Though all I can find is that it was owned by the state of Arkansas & Tennessee. At 124k miles, it looks like someone backed it into a light pole based on photos I found via VIN search. That has been repaired and honestly has no visible damage, though it fails the magnet test in those areas.
I CANNOT stress this enough....I bought from a pretty shady dealer and knew I would find WILD things on the vehicle, but for my area and the price, I took the risk.
My spare tire was 21 years old. It was legally OLD ENOUGH TO DRINK. What's crazy is that it means someone took whatever spare was on it and replaced it with someone even older, crappier, and the incorrect size. Talk about a safety hazard. It has been replaced with a cheap but safe spare, as I will be upgrading wheels here shortly. More on that later.

My washer fluid currently does not work, though I am unsure if it is a clogged line or a bad pump, getting that looked at in the upcoming repairs

Since purchasing it, the first 'mods' I did were buy some One Stone armrests (honestly, a non-negotiable, improved long-distance comfort tenfold) and a 3D printed cup holder extension because I spilled a drink like a week in and flooded my cup holder. very thankful that it did not get all over the mechanical switches and gunk them up. I also ripped those chunky 3rd row seats out just for rear trunk space as I have a Goldendoodle that appreciates the extra room when a cooler or gear is back there with her!

Repairs already done:
-New oil pan: completely stripped drain plug with a basically smooth drain hole and a temp plug holding it together.
-New updated metal oil filter housing. The original plastic one was completely cracked a slightly leaking
-New Front Rotors & Pads, OEM. --- I wish I had gone with Tundra or some aftermarket larger brake kit post purchase.

Upcoming repairs: As of this post
Currently waiting for these parts to come in, an appointment with a family friend mechanic is set within the next 2 weeks. I'm currently in an apartment and cannot do these things by myself here. One day, a house will come. As I have learned and scoped out AHC threads here, I recognize my system is meant to level out and adjust, but the harshness of the ride and lack of pressurization in the AHC system, I knew something big was coming. From sitting at red lights or in a parking lot, the car would just suddenly drop 2 inches, slowly rise; rinse and repeat.
-Transmission fluid flush
-Front and Rear Diff fluid flush
-New spark plugs
-Air filters: engine and cabin
-Rear shocks, both driver and passenger, had leaks.
-Accumulators x4.
-AHC fluid flush and replace
-Washer fluid working again
-Master Cylinder.
I saved the master cylinder for last so I could talk about it. As winter has been leaving, my brakes have been becoming softer and softer. Even after replacing the fronts and doing a full system bleed 2x. It got to the point where my first 80 degree day of the year led to me being at multiple red lights, having my brake pressure be as hard as possible, and still creeping forward, needing to put the car in N to stop it from hitting the people in front of me. I've chosen to bite the bullet and swap this out, as I know I have tires coming shortly and plan to drive the car to Maine this summer. Brakes and safety just come first.

Speaking of new tires!!! I purchased a set of Nomad Convoy 501 wheels in Utility Gray colorway! They are a 17" rim with +25 offset. The goal is to put 285/75/17 tires on, though I have not figured out if I want to put a set of AT4W or K03s on the car yet. I know there are a million threads on this. I'm personally leaning k03 as I am a sucker for the white wall letters. If anyone has insight as to whether it would be smarter to get a C load AT4W vs an E load K03, I am open to suggestions. I do know the AT4W at that load range has an R speed rating vs the S speed rating of the K03.

Mods post repairs:
-Bluetooth and/or Grom V2 kit installation. Currently running the aux cable to my phone or iPad that I have mounted with a CD mount
-Tint those windows!
-Window visors
-Chrome delete
-I may take a stab at swapping the lens covers on the headlights, as they look like they've smoked 2 packs a day for the last 16 years. And upgraded hikari lights would be a massive change for nighttime driving.

Obviously, armor is something we all want, though the cost of a bumper, winch, and lights is likely not to happen any time soon due to house hunting.

So far, I have genuinely been enjoying this vehicle and look forward to updating this thread as time goes on. I am hopeful for the ride quality to improve over time. Prior to this car, I had a 2015 LR4 that rode like a dream, and have been quite disappointed with Rook.... Sadly, the LR4 was deemed totaled in a small fender bender accident. I took it that fate did not want me to deal with an airbag blowout on a trail, so I pivoted to the LC/LX direction. I almost went with a 100 series for looks, but valued the torque and power of the 200.

I look forward to updating this thread and showing the world that 187k is just the beginning for an LX! I think the goal is 500k, super excited for the process!

A couple of other things to note that I forgot to include!

My glovebox was constantly falling, so I found the thread regarding drilling a hole in the backside of the glovebox door and adjusting the tensioner to get it to stick, works like a charm! Massive shout-out to this community for that. I am sorry, I don't have the original thread to link.
Also, as seen in my profile picture, my driver's mirror does not fold in! It appears to have been hit as there are scuff marks on the side. It wobbled when I first got it, but a screwdriver and 30 seconds of effort got that to go away. So now it just kind of winks at me with the passenger side being the only one to fold. Not really a concern as apparently it's all plastic internals and is bound to break someday anyway.

Lastly, rear hatch struts need to be swapped soon, as it no longer raises with any effort or control of its own, and I hit my head pretty hard on it one day, and am don't always love using the power hatch feature as it can be slower. The primary concern is having that hatch fall on me, my wife, or the dog... safety first!

I truly think I bought one of the worst examples of this car that I could have! Maybe im a glutton for pain, but the journey has been completely worth it! I love knowing that I am restoring something that will take me as far as I am willing to push it. Cheers to many more miles, both dirt and highway.

From your description doesn't sound like the worst sample to buy. It only looks neglected both in maintenance and repairs. But you have a good plan and drive and these are solid trucks that do not easily fall apart.
I do not know if the radiator is a problem on 09 or if your's was replaced. You may want to look in to it.
I bet you'll love the ride once AH is fixed.

Enjoy your ride!

One thing missing in your list is greasing the drive shafts.
I appreciate the insight, I’ll bring this up with my mechanic!

At the moment the radiator has been inspected and appears to be in decent condition. And there is no valley plate leak from what we have seen. Though after 7-8k miles this summer time will tell.

My brother has a family heirloom in an 80 series (40th anniversary edition) at around 435k miles that is his daily driver. We grew up in it and so I fully agree that these vehicles are built for the long haul and very solid trucks.

2009s are fun to build. Toss the sunroof drains on your PM list

My nomad wheels came in today! Super excited to see these new shoes go on instead of the stock 20”s.

Though it will likely be 2-3 weeks, maybe longer before I can purchase the rubber. Need all the repairs to take place first.

To anyone that happens to stumble across my thread, K03 or AT4W?

Sensor lift completed tonight! New wheels going on tomorrow! Was gonna do the falken C load but there was a 60 day back order. Pulled the trigger on K03 285/75/17 E/S. Photos inbound tomorrow. Won’t have the vehicle for a few days though as it undergoes a large overhaul as mentioned above. Just in time for early warm summer days.

Sneak peek of final setup from in the shop.
285/75/17
Car has been dropped off for its major service. LOTS of rubbing: front bumper, mud flap, and full lock against wheel well. +25 offset keeps it off UCA.

Might have to do a front bumper chop/heavy trim . If anyone stumbles across my thread and can link me in the right direction, I haven’t had much luck finding threads of similar projects. I’ve seen it but lost the url. I appreciate any help.

This will get you sorted

You’ll likely not need a body mount chop with 285s/25mm. I didn’t rub with 295s but did with 12.5”

This is incredibly helpful! Thank you for sharing, lots of good knowledge in here. I’ve actually read this thread but didn’t save it, so much quality information.

Will provide updates once I get the car back.

Okay, time for the post service update!
It doesn’t even feel or drive like the same vehicle. The AHC being serviced has proven to be immediately worth it. I still don’t think it’s as comfortable as my LR4, but I blame the E rated tires for that. Shifting has become much smoother, and the engine just sounds cleaner. No longer do I have a harsh 2-3 shift. Ended up replacing the washer fluid pump and have that serviceable in all areas again.

34” tires, 285/75/17 K03
I’ve done a sensor lift on both front and rear, though the rear sits taller than I’d like and I might undo the lift, but I haven’t done a trail shakedown yet so gonna leave it until science is involved.
Man leaving discount tire was a riot, honestly laughable at how bad the rub was. The ride height, comfort, and weight of these tires is entirely noticeable. I went from ~15mpg mixed daily commute to currently 12.5, though there has been a lot of stop and go traffic. Killer on this big rig. The wife loves how it rides now and is excited to be in it compared to the bumpiness it had before. Admittedly I’m slightly disappointed in the noise the K03’s put off, I’m hoping that because the tires are so new with less than 200 miles on them they will get quieter as the sharpness of lug edges goes down. Noise starts at about 20-25mph. Goes into a rhythmic at about 55 and never really becomes LOUD, but running 70-80 it’s there. Speed variance has changed a bit, I find 60mph roads I sit at about 57 if I’m pacing. As speed goes up so does the inaccuracy. But nothing major.

Back of front wheel well
Had to cut a small portion of the side steps off. You can just tell that it’s rubbing fender liner just above, haven’t had to time to heat gun massage it out. I actually stripped and broke a bolt on the drive side, and the rub was so bad that it pushed a clip out underneath the driver door. Popped it back in and started cutting, no real damage.

Front of front wheel well.
Removed the 2 bolts and the flap? That exist up there. So far that’s been a pretty bad rub, the flaps were wearing down. Even with the flaps gone, there is still a good bit of rub on that liner at 80-100% full lock.

In reverse start at 75% lock you can tell the lugs are catching the front of the wheel well and dragging just a bit. In time I’ll get it, for now I just park in easier access places. Nothing major through any of that though.

Up next: headlight lens replacement. Not sure when it will happen but it’s definitely my least favorite part of the car currently those smokers lung yellow cracked lens have gotta go. Will improve the car quite a bit. But for now, it’s time to enjoy it, learn a bit more, and do some trail shakedowns!

You can unbolt the liner on the underside and drill new holes pushing it forward. Works like a charm.

This. I pushed mine forward like 1.5" and did some remolding with a heat gun. No rubs with 35s

Sounds like ive got a simple little project for this weekend.
what did y'all do for the liner in the back? just heat gun or relocation?

You don’t even have to drill new holes, can push it in one hole width and just use the existing holes. I do remember something with the z clip though sits been six years , fuzzy memories

Looks like you already bent that little bracket out of the way. I did a little heat gun to the liner and then zip tied it to the bent bracket as well

Haven’t gotten around to removing the rub on the front fenders just yet. But I’ve been getting about 15.3-16.5 mpg hwy across ~1k hwy miles. The 15.3 is avg when doing 75-80 w/cruise off. 16.3 was over about 450 miles w/cruise on and set to 68 on speedometer, about 72 according to 3 accelerometer tracker/gps apps.

In town I’m getting 12.7-13.2 consistently. Stop and go chugs gas.
