Hey guys. I just replaced my transmission mount on the lx470. It was fairly easy.

Get the front up on ramps.

Using a 17mm deep socket, remove the 2 mount to cross member bolts

using a 17mm socket and a prybar, remove the 4 mount to transmission bolts

Jack up the transmission(I jacked it up with a floor jack at the back end of the transmission. I used a 2x4 to mate the jack to the transmission.)

At this point, You are supposed to be able to remove the transmission mount according to the Haynes repair manual. I found that I could not remove the mount, so I removed the bolts on the cross member.

Using a 14mm socket and impact driver and some pb buster, remove 4 bolts on one side of the cross member. On the other side, simply loosen the bolts a little bit. The cross member will move out of the way and the mounts can be swapped.

When installing the new transmission mount, make sure you orientate it the correct way. It is not symmetrical!

You can see the bolts are offset from the center and there is a half circle cut out of the metal plating to help you figure this out.

Install is the reverse of removal, with one thing to look out for....

I would keep the cross member loose (say 1/4" on all 8 bolts) until you get all 4 mount to transmission bolts attached, Once you have these 4 bolts attached, then you are golden to button it back up in any order you choose.

Enjoy a beer, ice cream, or gluten free banana nut muffins(if you're into that sort of thing)

My mount was at 245k miles old on a 2003 lx470. The rubber is noticeably harder than the replacement mount. I used ANCHOR brand mounts from off of Rockauto. I will let you guys know what I think of them once I drive this Bull Moose again. Engine mounts are next!

cross member to chassis bolts are 72 Nm (53 ft-lbs)

mount bolts are 59Nm (44 ft-lbs)

The manual did not specific mount to trans or mount to cross member.... odd! but the Mount to cross member bolts are grade 5 and thick so I think they can take more than 44 ft-lbs. I torqued them the same as the cross member to chassis bolts and torqued the mount to trans bolts at 44 ft-lbs

The Haynes manual only gives Nm because it's from England or Austrailia.... They don't publish a Haynes manual for a landcruiser in the USA.

Here is a picture of the old mount, The screw driver is pointing at a gap that has opened up over time. The new mount did not have this gap.

What was the reason you replaced it? Any update on the new mount

I was at 250k miles and 15 years of age. Figured it was time. The forward to reverse shifting is smoother. I also did the engine mounts as well. The old mount's rubber was very hard compared to the new mount.

I never thought to go aftermarket, OEM was cheap enough. Now I need to get around to installing...thanks for writeup!

Awesome write up, do you have a write-up for the engine mounts? I've seen a few on the site but none details as to where to place the Jack and 2x4s to raise each side of the engine to get enough room to get the mounts off. Thx!

You need a crows foot wrench to do the engine mounts and I wasn't feeling like tackling that job at the moment, so I paid a shop to do it. I think it was just an hour of labor. The car is much smoother now and the engine cover doesn't rattle as much as it used to.

@Bull Moose 100, tks for well written and easy to follow notes on the trans mount. :princess:'s DD just turned over 200K and I noticed a vibration in the trans case lever at idle that changed once it got rolling. OEM mount I pulled looked like yours...deader than hell.

As you mentioned, it's good to start the 4 top bolts on the mount (small cutout faces front) and the nuts with washers to the 2 studs from below. Then I relocated the cross-member bolts, and torqued the mount and cross-member fasteners.

New engine and trans mounts, Amsoil signature series transmission fluid, and greasing the drive shaft has had a tremendous effect on the way the car feels when shifting from neutral to drive.

Has anyone else had to drop the transmission mount cross member to get good access to the four mount to trans bolts?

Yes. Just finished this job and dropping the crossmember is the way to go. I used jack stands to support it while I was removing the last bolts. It's not too heavy but the stands make it easier if you don't have an assistant. Also gave me a chance to clean up some rust and grease the mating surface of the crossmember and the frame.

Hello. I recently picked up a 2006 lx470 and the underbody is in decent condition, mostly surface rust. The transmission crossmember, however is in much worse shape and I would like to replace it. I do not intend to remove the transmission mount, just the crossmember.

This thread helps but I need a little more. Do I need to just remove the two mount to cross member bolts in the center along with the eight bolts connecting each end of the crossmember to the frame rails? Does the transmission need to be supported to swap out the crossmember?

Support the transmission. Remove the bolts holding the mount to the transmission. Drop the crossmember. Remove the nuts holding the mount to the crossmember. Replace the mount. Reverse this for installation.

Belated thanks to Bull Moose and Zjohn. I just got around to replacing the xmember and all went well!

The process from Zjohn is spot on. I let the crossmember hang from one bolt and swung the other end out of the way on a cardboard box. I supported the transfer case with a jack stand. Pretty simple nut and bolt job.

Couldn't find a torque spec for the bolts that connect the crossmember and the frame, so I went with 50 ft-lbs. (Edit: seeing now the torque spec might be in the post from Abuck above. 37ft-lbs)

Hi, I was looking for engine mounts and transmission mount on Bell Lexus and there are slightly different part numbers and different prices. Are they different because they're for different years? Have a 2007 here.

If you need help figuring out the orientation of the transmission mount, page AT-32 of the service manual states the "M" should face backward.
