I recently put 285/75R18 tires on my 2004 LX470, and in order to be able to put a same-sixe spare tire in the factory location there was no room left behind the factory bumper / cross member hitch.

I fabricated this adaptor by chopping about two inches off of the standard bolt-in adaptor and then welded in an extension from Harbor Freight.

It allows me to place my 1Up bike rack back far enough so that the tailgate can fold down without hitting.

Certainly reduces towing capacity, but it's worth it for daily bike hauling l.

Here it is before paint so you can see where the welds were placed.

I have a similar setup for my LC, the swing arm also functions as an extension.

Any chance you could post a closer pic of the hitch, your swing-out adapter, and the 1-up rack? Just pulled a Uhaul hitch off my LX to get more clearance but then realized that the tailgate doesn't clear anymore. This looks like a nice setup that doesn't appear to involve welding so I am curious to see if I could replicate. Thanks!

It definitely involved some welding. I wouldn’t trust it for anything really heavy, I use mine solely for the bike rack and it is rock solid. Sorry I don’t have any current pics of the entire setup.

If I was to do it again I’d just weld the receiver straight through the crossmember and call it done.

Nice outdoor pic. Looks like somewhere up 8th Street.

I had to do something similar when I went to 33s (285/70/17). I had to cut the hitch extender to fit the bigger tire. The hitch extender is for the lower tailgate to clear the 1Up (it also lowers the bike rack by about 2".

Thanks for the details! Nice solution for sure. Above my pay grade in terms of fabrication skills for now I’m afraid, but appreciate you taking the time to provide more pics/info.

@mrkdwrds The no fab method is to add an additional 1Up slot and just not use the frontmost slot. 😀

looks great all loaded up!! I want to learn to weld SO bad...time & money...
