As usual I was perusing craigslist for used Land Cruisers (like I need to buy another one) and there was a posting looking for a 100 Series or LX470 to be used in a movie. I sent a picture and short description and 2 days later I was contacted by a law firm in SF.
The law firm needed a 100 Series Land Cruiser to be used to film a vehicle re-eneactment scene to be used for an accident animation. Basically I would get paid to let them mount a camera in the driver's seat to film a short section of highway.
The accident had involved a woman driving a Lexus LX470 along 237 Eastbound. There is a section of the road that jaunts to the right quickly without much warning and the cars in the adjacent lanes tend to keep going straight, which in turn causes the vehicle in the far left lane to get boxed in. The far left lane is bordered by concrete dividers or "K-rails". These K-rails are approximately 2 feet from the left lane and rapidly decrease to 0 inches in under a few hundred feet. This really boxes the driver in especially when approaching a quick "S" in the road.
The LX470's front DS tire hit the K-rail, caught an edge, and the entire wheel disengaged from the axle. This sent the vehicle into a roll. The vehicle flipped 4 times, putting large gouges in the roadway and managed to smash every corner on the LX470. The "A" pillar held up very well considering. Air bags did not deploy since there was no impact to the direct front. The driver suffered major injuries including a brain hemorage that was fatal 2 weeks later.
My part involved loaning my 100 series to the Engineering Video crew to rig up a camera in the driver's seat positioned exactly at the height of the deceased driver. They made multiple passes by this "S" in the road and filmed cars in the right lane cut them off without knowing they were doing so. This will be used in court to prove that Cal-Trans needs to change the road or provide proper signage. There have been multiple collisions in this spot based on the amount of tire graffiti on the K-rails. In fact, during the filming, there were 2 near accidents to my vehicle
The crew was pretty cool and told us stories about some of the past re-enactments. In the end they fight against the automakers and civil planning that usually result in hundreds of deaths per year.
I've posted a few pics on my site. I'm supposed to get the photos of the wrecked LX470. I'll post up when they arrive.
