Mike,
The reason I asked about the ABS sensor removal is that it is an easy step to miss if you haven't got good instructions or haven't done a knuckle before. The sensor is plastic and gets broken very easily if not removed when the birfield is pulled out and/or inserted. It happens all the time and you have to replace them in pairs so it adds $200-$300 to the front axle service if you aren't careful.

Always read the FSM (or ask here) before you start a procedure that you are not familiar with.  It HURTS ($$$) to do a repair and find out you've messed up a perfectly good part by not following directions.

Hugh & C-Dan,
The 97 FSM isn't perfect either. The drawings and instructions on reinstalling the cage & balls inside the birfield is wrong. That section in the manual was carried over from other vehicles (older models or minis or ?)  I spent 2 nights trying to get my balls in and they wouldn't fit!!!  Robbie gave me a hand; all is well now, thanks.  :D

B,

Is that what you meant to say?? ;) :D :slap:

If you guys had not figured it out yet, Robbie is very talented. I doubt if there is any thing he can't do............... :D

Think about it, that's gotta be some friend.....

I think that is the first post by somebody other than Wench that had me laughing so hard.

Thanks for the good one B.

:D :D :D :D...I'm just getting off the floor now...ahem..back to the FSM.....

I've got one of those services here at the shop, (the manual service, nobody here to handle my balls for me, although my wife's last job title was Member Service Director :D) I currently use the Alldata service. It is supposed to be updated to the online service soon. Many of the pages come from the factory manuals. This is not always good as every manufaturer organizes their manuals in different ways. it replaces the shelves of Mitchell manuals I used to have for a lot less money, but does not replace the FSM.
I would definately be interested if someone was to "publish" a copy of the FSM on CD. I have no problem breaking copyright laws when they poke you for $200 a copy at the stealership.

Anyone know if the LX450 part numbers are the same as those of the FZJ80? Even if you have a LX, can't you just go to your local stealership and tell 'em you have a '97 LC (for engine/driveline parts)?

Jim,

A lot of the mechanical is identical. I have catalogs for both vehicles. The interior trim is different and the fenders, doors, quarters, lower rear gate, ETC, are different.

Thanks, Dan. I was just wondering if one would end up being at the mercy of the Lexus stealership for parts. I'd imagine the LX470 has a lot more Lexus-specific parts.

I don't know if they have any more in stock, but Lexus-Parts.com had the following FSM as a close-out item yesterday. Item ID:1535, 00245-RM515-U - R/M 1997 LX450, Quantity:1, Price:$94.07. Shipping was $7.25, so $101.32 total.
I also picked up one of the $30 CDs on Ebay and am very disappointed - very incomplete, and lots of fluff like inspection lists.

Usual disclaimer - I have nothing to do with L-P.com or Ebay.
