Mike,
The reason I asked about the ABS sensor removal is that it is an easy step to miss if you haven't got good instructions or haven't done a knuckle before. The sensor is plastic and gets broken very easily if not removed when the birfield is pulled out and/or inserted. It happens all the time and you have to replace them in pairs so it adds $200-$300 to the front axle service if you aren't careful.
Always read the FSM (or ask here) before you start a procedure that you are not familiar with. It HURTS ($$$) to do a repair and find out you've messed up a perfectly good part by not following directions.
Hugh & C-Dan,
The 97 FSM isn't perfect either. The drawings and instructions on reinstalling the cage & balls inside the birfield is wrong. That section in the manual was carried over from other vehicles (older models or minis or ?) I spent 2 nights trying to get my balls in and they wouldn't fit!!! Robbie gave me a hand; all is well now, thanks.
