I need to get a second ket cut for my wife's LX450. These are the ones with the milled slot down the middle of the key.

Is the dealer the only show in town for cutting these (they want $110)?

Does anybody know another locksmith that can cut this type of key? How about Toyota - surely they must be cheaper.

Sorry if this topic has been covered before.

Any competent locksmith should be able to cut them. I haven't had an LX keys made, but a local locksmith did the keys for my buddy's BMW which are similar.

Toyota will not be able to cut them, Lexus only key. Your Lexus dealer would need to send the VIN number to head office in TO and they cut them there.

My local Lexus dealer said they have a guy in town that can cut them for $50 + $30 from Lexus for the key blank.

I'm going through the same thing now myself just got the truck with one key and need a spare.

When I had a new key done, I just went into the Lexus dealer and they cut the key on the spot. They verified that I owned the vehicle and I was on my way. It was expensive though! I paid $60 for the key (which included cutting) and $120 for the remote.

Got mine at Lexus of Seattle and cost me $50 for the key and $25 for the programming.

What programming? There is no chip in these keys.

I hope you didn't pay 'em $25 to program a key fob because it takes less than 10 seconds to do.

I'm fat so it probably would take me 10 seconds to bend over to reach the button under the seat.

I've been told that the key cutting machine is around $8k and not all dealerships will have them. If Calgary Lexus does not have one, they often will know which local locksmith has the milling machine.

Phone around to all the local locksmiths and see if they can copy your key.

If not, then Lexus Canada will cut your key by VIN. This is fine, as long as your car has never been re-keyed (which is possible, with insurance claims, or stolen/lost keys) but is low probability.

Hope that helps. Went through this myself when I got my LX450 and bought a key blank from Lexus, and paid $35/ea to have the key copied by a locksmith, as my dealership did not have the equipment to do so.

Cutting by VIN is handy if you lose all your keys...

OK, so here's the skinny one this:

1. I went to Calgary Lexus. It was $70. Originally he copied the key I had but the new key barely worked because the key bing copied was worn and a copy itself. He made me one off the VIN which workes just fine.

2. Sidewinder keys are also used on VW, Audi, and a few other vehicles so presumably you could get a copy made at one of these dealers for less $$$.

3. Budget Lock (now part of Calgary Lock and Safe) does not cut Lexus keys depite the fact that their webste says they do. A few years ago they were able to get me some early FJ40 key blanks but thats another story.

4. After posting my original post (above) I noticed that my key has 'Broadway Lock' stamped on it. My LX was originaly from Vancouver so 86Tuning and Wheelingnoob can get replacement keys cut there as an alternative to the Lexus dealer.

Like said before, any standard locksmith. Mine cost $25, key and the cut

Programming the remote is what they're likely charging for. While the key doesn't have a chip, the have to pair the key with your truck. It is a rip off type charge, but most people don't know any better. I did not know about the online sources for these keyless entry remotes and paid $120 for the remote alone. This came with "complimentary" programming from Lexus of Bellevue. At the time, I knew I could program it myself, but since I was already paying for the remote, I let them do everything.

they have to pair the key with the ruck???? Not on any 80 I know

The remote needs to be paired with the alarm system, but that has nothing to do with the key

You can buy a remote from Cdan for about $60 brand new OEM or $35 on ebay

Man, reading this thread makes me want to invest in KY Jelly, lots of people getting butt raped. Any competent lock smith can cut Lexus keys and do it for under $50. The alarm remotes can be had brand new OEM from Cdan for $60 and on ebay for less. (Yes this is already posted, repitition might help it stick in some heads) There is no chip in any 80 key that needs programing. Programing involves pushing the button on the black box under the drivers seat and then pushing the button on the remote.

I'm not familiar with Canada, but here there are lots of locksmiths to choose from. Most of them can do everything a dealorship can do at less than half the cost. Shop around, there is likely a lock smith right around the corner that can help.

There is a chip in an LX key. You can get any good locksmith with the machine (it is a reverse cut) to cut the key, but it will only open the door unless it it a lexus key. The blank key costs around $70 from a lexus dealer but can be purchased cheaper online. The remote costs around $80 from lexus. I agree with jlg32281. The labor cost of 1/2 hour is a rip off. Good luck.

"What programming? There is no chip in these keys."

I actually paid them $75 for a new key and programming my extra remote that I bought off eBay. They threw in a nice stainless steel license plate frame with it as well. Considering I drank 2 cups of their fine Starbucks brew, ate a nice muffin and read the morning newspaper, I thought of it as a great way to spend the money.

I have a Lexus and there is no chip. What you state is incorrect

My daughter also has an LX450 and has no Chip

$25 for a reverse cut key from a locksmith

Whoever told you this lied to you.

or they were mistaken, because the LX470 is immobilized, where the LX450 is not. Easy mistake to make.

Could be. Thanks for pointing that out as I jumped to a conclusion rather than sticking with the facts:beer:

The facts are there is no chip
